Caroline’s POV:

The woman, despite having kinder features than the nanny, still alarmed me with how much she resembled Laura. Even if she wasn’t the nanny that had stolen George, she was still clearly related to her. These clearly weren’t some random thugs Laura had picked up off the street. Knowing this, the uneasy feeling in my belly that Laura had given me didn’t go away.

“Jesus, the ground must be so uncomfortable,” she fussed, strolling over to me and offering me a helping hand. I took it, though not without great hesitation. The ache in my ankle still hindered my movement, but I knew I could handle myself for the most part.

The woman spun on her heel to face the thinner of the two men. “You’re making her lay on the floor, Brook? She’s a person, not an animal! You couldn’t at least get her a mattress?”

The man, Brook apparently, jumped in surprise and immediately went on the defensive. “Hey, she’s not even supposed to be here! We didn’t even know what to do with her!”

She pinched the bridge of her nose in agitation before peering back at me. She must have noticed the profound confusion on my face, because she quickly moved to explain herself.

“I’m sorry these men here have given you such a hassle,” she sighed, her smile sympathetic and kind. “My name is Mia. I’m a villager here.”

A villager? I didn’t even realize there were villages nearby William’s villa. Where was I? In the end, it didn’t matter, because my priorities were set on one thing and one thing only: making sure George was safe.

“Nice to meet you, Mia. I’m Caroline,” I introduced myself.

“Caroline? Well, ain’t that a lovely name?” Mia chuckled with a smile.

I faked a smile of my own, because while this woman seemed nice, I couldn’t forget she was related to Laura. “I was brought here with a baby. His name is George. Do you know where he is?”

“George?” Mia chirped, as though connecting a name to the face for the first time. “Of course I do. The little one is staying with my children, and they’re getting along rather well, if I do say so myself. My daughter especially has taken a liking to him. If it wasn’t for her physical condition, then…”
