Caroline’s POV:
Had any outsider witnessed how Mia and the two men treated me during my stay at the village, they would have been astounded to find out these people were my kidnappers.
They had treated me with nothing but kindness and respect during this time. Brook and Harry took a bit of getting used to, but once they warmed up to me, they were such sweet men.
For the first time in a long while, I found myself without concern. Even my stomach cancer hadn’t been giving me too many problems. George was also adapting to his new life fairly well, and I was allowed to see him whenever I pleased.
George had grown a particular fondness for Alice and would cling to her as if she was his sister. Alice, the poor girl, never felt annoyed by George’s antics, always indulging even the most bothersome behaviors.
Why did fate always treat the most innocent of people with such contempt? Alice didn’t deserve her fate at the hands of this disease, but despite the hand she was dealt by life, she still faced every day with a smile. It was honestly inspiring to witness, and I only wished I could be as strong as her.
Mia’s words about Harry still lingered in my mind. I couldn’t help but be curious about Harry’s past. How could a man so famous and successful end up living in a small, forgettable village like this? As we passed each other each day, I couldn’t shake the sense that he was worried about something.
The question surrounding his past was one that lingered in my mind from time to time, and I had half the mind to ask him about it. However, I never got the chance. It seemed like he took every excuse he could find to avoid being in the same room with me alone.
Maybe, just maybe, I could offer him some help. If needed, I could turn to Martin for assistance. He never turned down the chance to give me a helping hand, and I missed our friendship dearly.
On a particularly sunny day, I found myself with the urge to explore my surroundings a bit. “Hey, Mia!” I called my new friend. “It’s alright if I take a walk around the village, right? I saw a river that I wanted to visit; maybe stick my feet in and enjoy the water.”
Mia visibly brightened up at my request and gave me an enthusiastic smile. “Of course, hon! I’m glad you’ve taken a liking to our humble home. You won’t get sights like this around the city. Just make sure you get back before it’s too dark, alright?”
