Chapter 104
The evening I dreaded the most finally came. I took a deep breath and looked at Mom while she helped me pack a few of my personal things, which consisted of a couple of clothes and toiletries. Watching her made tears cloud my eyes.
I told her I had a sudden and unexpected out–of–town business trip and that I had to leave tonight. She instantly believed me without asking further questions. She even helped met prepare what I would need for my so–called trip, despite my insistence that I could do it on my own. So here she was, helping me prepare my things for an out–of–town business trip
that didn’t even exist.
I hated lying to her, but it was the only way I could leave the house without making her and the rest of my family suspicious.
“I’m done,” Mom said, looking at me with a satisfied smile on her lips. “Are you sure you haven’t forgotten to bring anything with you?” she asked. The smile on her face was replaced with worry.
She was like an overly worried mother sending her daughter on a field trip for the first
time. The thought almost made me smile despite everything.
“I already have everything I need inside my suitcase, Mom. You don’t need to worry,” I
assured her. Deep inside, what I was really thinking was that I wouldn’t even need those things tonight, so it didn’t matter if I forgot something.
“Well then, I’ll be downstairs to watch over my granddaughter. I bet your father is touring her again inside his library and boasting about his large collection of books. I’ll take her from him before he turns my only granddaughter into a book nerd like he is. Not that I’m complaining; I love your father. But I don’t want Isabelle to grow up with her nose always stuck in a book. She might never marry!”
“You’re exaggerating, Mom,” I told her, managing to give her a smile.
“I must hurry!” Mom said, skittering to the door. I followed her with my eyes until the door

closed behind her. When she was gone, I rose from the bed and wrote a letter for my whole family.
I didn’t know what would happen tonight, but just in case things did not go according to plan, I wanted my whole family to know how much I loved them.
After writing the letter, I folded it neatly until it was half the size of my palm and placed it underneath the antique flower vase. Mom would discover it tomorrow after she replaced the water in the roses.
I rose from my chair and changed into a formal long–sleeve jumpsuit so Mom would not find it suspicious if I wore something less than formal. The jumpsuit was comfortable, and I could move my legs freely if I needed to run for my life tonight. Above all, I chose to wear the jumpsuit because it was black, which would make me almost invisible in the dark.
I combed my hair and tied it into a ponytail at the bottom of my nape. Just to make it more believable that I was going on a business trip, I applied a thin layer of makeup. It wasn’t necessary tonight, but Mom would wonder if I didn’t put any makeup on. She knew that I always applied a small amount of makeup every time I left for a business trip because I was facing important people.
Done with my makeup, I finally grabbed my suitcase and walked downstairs to say goodbye to Mom.
Entering the library, I found Mom and Dad inside. Isabelle was now holding the cover of a small book in her tiny hands. Mom tried to gently pull the book away, but Isabelle refused to let it go.
“My God, Philip. She doesn’t want to let go of the book… I think I’m too late.”
For a while, I watched them pull the book out of Isabelle’s hand, but Mom couldn’t forcefully grab it away because it was one of Father’s precious books.
“Let her have it. I think Isabelle’s like me. She’s fascinated with books.”
“If she grows up like you, she’ll never be able to marry.”

“Ouch!” Father said. But when I looked at him, he was trying his best not to succumb to fits
of laughter.
I cleared my throat to catch their attention. They instantly looked at me.
“Are you sure you don’t need a driver? I think it would be wise to take one of your bodyguards with you,” Mom suggested.
“It’s okay, Mom. I can drive on my own,” I replied.

She heaved a sigh and didn’t argue anymore. Slowly, Mom walked to me and pulled me into a tight hug. I hugged her back and told her I loved her.
“I love you too, honey,” Mom replied, kissing me on the cheek.
