Grey stood his ground, unable to let go. He gave the man a scathing glare, and the man did the same in return. Each man refused to back down, continuing to fight each other’s gaze like two wolves about to pounce on each other.
The vicinity turned into a battle arena between the two predators. Unable to endure the silence any longer, I cleared my throat. “Please stop,” I whispered to both of them before they did something drastic, like punching each other in the face.
The stranger’s strong hand tightened on mine. In chilling hostility, he finally spoke, his eyes never leaving Grey’s. “Drop my wife’s hand.”
My ex–husband’s expression hardened. He clenched his left fist at his side, and his jaw
tightened in response. For a fleeting moment, I thought he would argue, but then he completely surprised me as his fingers loosened on my wrists.
I immediately grabbed my hand, as though his touch burned my skin. “My mistake; I mistook your wife for someone I know,” Grey apologized.
The stranger beside me did not reply. Instead, he steered me away from Grey and ushered me toward where his car was parked. Without questioning him, I blindly followed after I finally recognized who he was. He was Miss Francine’s nephew, the one she had warned me about. She had shown me his picture before I left the spa and salon. It just took me a moment to realize who he was. However, Miss Francine didn’t mention that he would be picking me up at the airport, and I wondered why he was there.
He opened the door for me, and when I got inside the car, he closed the door. Opening the trunk of his sleek Bugatti, he placed my suitcase inside before closing it again. He then took
his seat in the driver’s seat.
My gaze went to the tinted window, and I realized that Grey was still standing in his place.
His gaze was locked on the side of the car where he knew I was sitting. Even after the car sped away, he refused to move. After disappearing from my peripheral vision, I leaned back in my seat and sighed with relief. He almost caught me, I thought to myself, wondering

“I apologize for coming to the airport without notice,” the man spoke, and my thoughts returned to the present. “By the way, I’m Cain Laurence Matteo, Francine’s nephew.” He introduced himself and extended his hand to me.
Removing the sunglasses covering my eyes, I took his hand. “I’m Lilibeth Phoenix,” I introduced myself in return.
Cain smiled wider and squeezed my fingers. Then, without warning, he pulled my hand closer to his lips and laid,a soft kiss on the back of my hand. “A beautiful name for a beautiful lady,” he whispered as he let my hand go and shifted his gaze back to the road.
Instantly, my cheeks turned crimson at the remark.
Francine was kind enough to warn me about her nephew. Looking at him now made me realize why women fell for him. A man this charming should be avoided.
“You have nice eyes. Are you wearing contact lenses?” Cain asked after throwing me a brief glance.
Even though he wasn’t looking directly at me, I shook my head. “They are natural. It’s a
birth condition called Heterochromia Iridum… my grandmother has the same condition.”
“And so I noticed,” Cain smiled at the mention of Leilani. His eyes sparkled, which meant
he was fond of her. “I just assumed that you wore different colored contact lenses to
surprise your grandmother today and to show her how much you appreciate her eyes.” He shrugged his shoulders as he added, “Anyway, you really look like a splitting image of her. Undoubtedly, the Phoenix blood runs through your veins.”
Cain finally focused his attention on driving. Silence lapsed between us.
Clearing my throat, I broke the silence after a while. “Did my parents tell you to pick me up at the airport?” I asked him out of curiosity.
“It’s Aunt Francine who asked me to pick you up,” he replied.

My eyes went wide in surprise. “She did? But she did not mention it to me when I was with her.”
“It’s because I told her I wasn’t available, I had an important meeting today. But something came up a few hours ago, and the meeting got canceled, Since I have no more appointments to go to, I decided at the very last minute to pick you up,” Cain explained,
“Well, that explains your very timely arrival,” I remarked,
The signal light turned red when we reached the intersection, and while waiting for the signal to turn green, Cain turned to me and asked, “About the man at the airport…” He hesitated at first but continued, “Do you know him?”
“I do,” I replied thoughtfully,
Cain’s deep blue eyes fixed on mine as he waited for me to continue,
“He was… just someone I knew,” I whispered. “I’m avoiding him, so I’m glad you arrived. and helped me escape from him.”
The light turned green, and Cain took his attention away from me and focused on the road. After that last question, he didn’t ask anything personal, and I was quite thankful for his
consideration.
An hour later, the silken ebony Bugatti pulled to a stop in front of an elegant three–story
house.
Cain climbed out of the Bugatti first. Before I could open the door on my own, he did it for me. “Welcome to Chateau De Phoenix,” he announced with a smile on his lips.
“It’s beautiful,” I mumbled under my breath while looking at the modernized chateau painted in gold, silver, and white.

“Your parents are surely waiting for you inside. Don’t keep them waiting any longer,” Cain said beside me. When my gaze turned to him, he was hauling my suitcase out of the car trunk.
