Marguerite leaned in closer to him, her voice low and strained, "What exactly do you want from me?" To anyone else, it might have seemed like a tense standoff, but to Silas, it felt surprisingly intimate.
His gaze was burning. If he stayed even a second longer, who knew what he'd do? Plus, his head was starting to throb, but he didn't want Marguerite to worry about him. Not that she seemed to be the worrying type anymore.
As Silas turned to leave, Maurice casually retrieved a folder from the coffee table. "Hold on a sec, Silas."
Silas paused but didn't turn around.
"I just finished a meeting nearby," Maurice said, "and thought I'd drop by to see Marguerite. Didn't expect to find you here, but since you are, I've got a great business opportunity. Interested?"
Marguerite tensed, knowing exactly what Maurice was talking about—the wafer technology project. He had a contract ready, so this was no impromptu visit. She couldn't let Silas get tangled up with Maurice. She couldn't let him become a pawn in Maurice's risky game.
She blurted out, "Mr. Ward's work doesn't overlap with yours at all. He's not interested. Can't you find someone else?"
Her voice was urgent, and for the first time, Silas turned to look at her. What was she so anxious about?
Maurice chuckled, turning to her with a smirk, "Silas hasn't said anything yet. How do you know he's not interested?"
Marguerite bit her lip, her eyes darting to Silas.
Marguerite collapsed onto the couch, wondering if Silas had understood her silent plea. But she couldn't dwell on it. She got up and turned off all the lights in her apartment, then pulled out her phone and activated the recording mode, scanning every corner of the room.
In the pitch-black darkness, a small voice piped up confidently, "Mom, stop checking. There aren't any cameras here."
Marguerite froze, the voice coming from somewhere unseen. "How do you know what I'm doing?"
"In low light, a phone's recording feature can pick up the infrared signals from cameras. It's a must-know for anyone living alone. I saw it online," Hayes explained, sounding wise beyond his years.
Marguerite flicked the light back on with a snap and walked over to Hayes, marveling, "You’re a smart little guy. But how are you so sure there aren't any cameras in here?"
