She seemed to recall something, nodding hesitantly before mumbling, “It was me who gave Dad his name…”
Hayes didn’t think Teresa was hiding anything from him; instead, he figured she was just saddened by old memories.
Uncomfortable, Teresa took a sip of orange juice before continuing, “Dad really can’t remember anything. He doesn’t even know I’m his daughter. We even did a paternity test to be sure.
To protect myself, I had him wear a mask, got rid of his distinctive birthmark, and somehow managed to fix his sense of smell that he’d lost.
The reason I gained weight was because after I got shot, my health took a turn. The doctors had me on a ton of medication and hormones. I was also terrified someone would recognize me, so I just kept eating to comfort myself.
But you know what’s the weirdest part? Dad can’t remember a thing—sometimes trying to recall the past even gives him migraines.
The symptoms are obvious, but he doesn’t even realize he’s lost his memory. Not a single doubt!”
Hayes, trying to look wise beyond his years, stroked his chin. His eyes, bright as grapes, were filled with worry and determination.
“It’s all because of the chip,” he said.
“I thought so too! That chip is the root of all this! Hayes, is there any way to fix it, to get rid of the chip?”
Hayes looked lost and a little forlorn. He turned to Teresa, despair flickering in his gaze.
“Teresa, there isn’t a perfect solution. If we try to force the chip out of Dad’s brain, it’ll kill him instantly.”
Teresa froze, her mind conjuring up a nightmare image of her father dying right in front of her. Tears spilled down her cheeks before she could stop them.
“What are we supposed to do? Every time Dad sees Mom, he gets those headaches. They can’t be apart forever!”
Hayes gently wiped Teresa’s tears, his voice soft. “Don’t panic. The chip can’t be removed, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing we can do.”
Teresa lifted her tear-stained face, a glimmer of hope sparking in her eyes. “There’s still a way?”
“Dad gets headaches when he sees Mom because a memory suppression program was implanted. That program wipes Mom from Dad’s mind entirely.
So whenever Mom gets close to him or he tries to remember the past, the chip starts acting up—that’s why he’s in pain.
The only solution is to stabilize the chip, so Dad won’t get those headaches when he sees Mom.”
