Bride behind the mask novel (Marguerite) novel Chapter 882

Half an hour later, Cresthaven Hospital.

Marguerite had just returned from seeing Violet and was helping the nurse change the dressing on Maurice’s gunshot wound when Miley and Robert burst in, Hayes trailing behind them—apparently bumped into in the lobby.

Robert’s face was its usual calm, but Miley radiated hostility; her scowl was thunderous, as if she was counting down the seconds before tearing Maurice limb from limb.

Sensing the tension, the nurse finished up quickly and made a hasty exit.

Marguerite was surprised to see Hayes in tow with the pair and stood up, asking,

“Why didn’t you let me know you were coming?”

Miley nearly exploded. “Would you have let me come if I’d told you?”

She had a point.

Marguerite was well aware that Miley despised the fact that she was looking after Maurice at the hospital. If Miley had called ahead, Marguerite would probably have found some excuse to keep her away, just to avoid a scene.

Still, Marguerite shot her a meaningful look and lowered her voice, murmuring,

“Don’t make a fuss. We can talk about this at home.”

Miley rolled her eyes, dragged a chair over, and sat at the foot of Maurice’s bed with Hayes in her arms, assuming the air of a matriarch defending her family.

Marguerite almost laughed; Miley always bullied the meek and feared the strong. If Maurice weren’t bedridden and Robert weren’t backing her up, Miley wouldn’t dare challenge Maurice so directly.

Robert, ever the diplomat, turned to Maurice with a practiced concern.

“How are you holding up?”
