As Miley spoke, she pulled a phone out of her pocket.

“If you don’t believe me, let me tell you something else. Remember that phone you asked Chuck to check out? He found spyware installed on it! And I’d bet anything it was Maurice who put it there, right?”

Marguerite’s hand faltered—not because the result surprised her, but because she didn’t understand how the phone ended up with Miley.

“I told Chuck not to tell you guys, but that little traitor went and spilled the beans anyway.”

“It was just a stroke of luck, really. The technician Chuck took the phone to works at Robert’s garage—he’s the resident tech guy over there.”

Miley waved the phone as she lectured, full of exasperated concern.

“Now, honestly—are we supposed to feel safe letting you hang around a guy who’s planted spyware on your phone not once, but twice?”

Marguerite managed a crooked smile, not wanting to listen to Miley’s well-meaning nagging for another minute. She joked, “Alright, alright, message received! If it weren’t for my wonderful best friend, I’d probably have fallen for Maurice’s tricks all over again.”

Satisfied, Miley nodded and crouched down to help Marguerite pack up their things.

“So get yourself back to the office already! Is Polar Radiance ever going to launch, or what?”

Hearing this, Hayes darted over and asked eagerly, “Mom, are you going back to work?”

Miley ruffled Hayes’s hair, her fondness clear in her eyes. “Yes, yes, your mom will be back at work tomorrow!”

With the answer he wanted, Hayes’s eyes lit up. He turned away and quickly sent a covert message to Teresa.

Hayes: [Didn’t Dad invest in Mom’s Polar Radiance project?]

Teresa: [He sure did—he’s the main investor.]

Hayes: [Mom’s going back to the office tomorrow for Polar Radiance. Can you give Dad a heads up?]

Teresa: [On it!]
