"That's great. Please follow me," the nurse beckoned Emma and Lauren towards the lab without a moment's hesitation.
Ashley and Jacob followed them closely. Emma's blood wasn't tested, it was directly transfused. Lauren's was tested and luckily, it was a O-negative and compatible.
Seeing the two large bags of blood being rushed into the emergency room, Ethan's heart was like a steak on a hot grill, filled with anxiety and pain. His chest ached so much that he could barely keep his usually upright posture. He had to hunch over in his chair.
He should have driven her to and from work that morning, despite her protests. That way, he would have been by her side when the accident happened. If he had been there, this wouldn't have happened. He would have protected her, even if it had cost him his own life. She never liked driving at high speed. She must have felt helpless at that moment.
What had he been doing these past few days? Why had he let Silvia manipulate him into hurting her?
Ethan hung his head, his fingers tangled in his hair, and his eyes were stinging.
Seeing her son in this state, Erica bit her lip but said nothing. She knew if anything happened to Ines, Ethan would be devastated. His feelings for Ines ran much deeper than anyone knew.
After a while, Ashley and Jacob returned, supporting Emma and Lauren. Both looked worse than wear, especially Emma, who was as pale as a sheet.
"Lauren, Emma, are you feeling okay?"
Lauren shook her head slightly, pointing at Emma. "I'm fine, but Emma donated too much blood, far more than an adult should. She's bound to be weak."
Erica took Emma's hand. "Emma, let me arrange a room for you to rest in."
Emma’s eyes were red and swollen. She shook her head, and her voice choked with tears. "No, I want to wait here. I only have one family member, and I won't rest until I know she's okay."
Erica, seeing Emma's determination, didn't argue, merely patting her shoulder and gesturing for her to sit.
After what felt like ages, the operating room doors finally opened. Ethan jumped to his feet and rushed to the surgeon. "Doctor, how is she?"
The lead surgeon removed his mask. "We've stabilized her for now, but she needs to be moved to ICU for observation. She's not out of danger until she's made it through the next twenty-four hours. Also, she had a head injury before, and this second injury has caused a severe concussion. Whether she'll wake up is a big question, and there might be other complications. You and your family should prepare yourselves for what may come."
At these words, Ethan swayed, and Erica quickly steadied him. She tried to suppress her worry and pain, but her voice trembled. "Ethan, it'll be okay. As long as she's alive... we'll wake her up."
Seeing Ethan in this state, the doctor added, "She's strong. If she can make it through these twenty-four hours, everything else will gradually get better."
