Broken Memories, Intertwined Hearts novel Chapter 440

As it was just the two of them at home, a blush crept onto Ines’ cheeks. Ethan wrapped his arms around her and playfully pinched her cheek, “Are you hungry?”

Ines hadn’t noticed her hunger until Ethan brought it up. After looking at the time, she replied, “I’m famished. If I had known your offer to cook dinner was just a ruse, Phoebe and I would’ve grabbed a bite outside.”

“Who said I didn’t cook dinner?” Ethan smiled and led Ines to the dining room.

Upon seeing the steak and spaghetti on the table, and the candlelight, Ines couldn’t help but feel her eyes wet. Ethan hugged her from behind, “Izzy, I planned to have a candlelight dinner with you before the incident, but it got messed up because of Jake.” He had missed that opportunity, so he made up for it by cooking this meal himself.

Ines understood Ethan’s intentions. She leaned back against him, with her back pressing against his chest. “Ethan, that’s all in the past. Let’s not bring it up.”

“No, Izzy, I need to explain. I never associated you with Leila until Jake misled me. My brother mentioned that you appeared to be breathless when he rescued you from the car, which led me to do some unthinkable things. I just wanted to get to the bottom of it. Later, I found out that Jake was in contact with Silvia. They must have planned everything, and we fell for it.”

So that was it. No wonder he acted so strangely. It was because he was worried that she wasn’t the real Ines. With this explanation, his actions made sense. Ines chuckled lightly, “Ethan, I understand. If you had been upfront about it, I wouldn’t have misunderstood.”

“Izzy, I’ll share any good news with you right away. But if there is the slightest chance of hurting you, I’ll shield you from it. Only when I’m sure you can handle it, will I let you face it,” Ethan sighed slightly. His approach had always been to share the joy and bear the sorrow first.

Ines laughed, “Your thoughtfulness touches me, Ethan. But remember, I’m not a porcelain doll. I’m a nearly thirty-year-old woman who has been through life and death situations. My resilience is far beyond my imagination. Sometimes, your good intentions might unintentionally hurt me. Let’s not keep secrets from each other, okay?”

“Rest assured. I’ve learned my lesson. I won’t make the same mistake again.”

Ines raised an eyebrow, “But why did I stop breathing then?”

“My brother said it could be a state of suspended animation. You were probably in that state. I just thought too much. And about that dream, I truly wanted Leila not to take you away.”

Ines nodded, believing everything he said.

“I also went to see Silvia because she claimed to know something about you,” Ethan looked at Ines earnestly.

“Honey, you’re so annoying. Are you going through a midlife crisis? I already knew about it. Silvia mentioned it when she was drunk. I heard it clearly, and you know that.”

“Izzy.” Ethan looked at Ines, with a mix of laughter and tears in his eyes. These past few days, he had been constantly nagged at for being either too scruffy or too talkative. Seeing Ethan’s pitiful look, Ines couldn’t help but burst into laughter. Just as she was about to sit down, Ethan held her up into his arms. "Izzy, it's not that I want to be so nagging, but I'm really scared. I can't bear the slightest possibility of losing you. Do you understand?" He didn't want any grudges between them, afraid that accumulating over time will lead to trouble.

How could Ines not understand this feeling? She had also experienced it very much real. She held Ethan's hand in return, "Husband, I understand how you feel. We will be fine in the future, and there won't be such incidents anymore."
