The mere mention of Noel’s mother made Phoebe visibly distressed. “It’s not that simple,” she sighed. “His mother has already labeled me as a poorly educated woman after that incident. Plus, considering that I had so many blind dates in the past, but never succeeded, she probably assumes there’s something wrong with me. Why else would I still be single? Frankly, his mother is not as open-minded as your mother-in-law. I dread having to deal with such a mother-in-law.”
All Ines could do was comfort Phoebe, trying to prevent her from overthinking. “Stop worrying. Noel will handle it.”
Phoebe knew she was right. “I’m willing to give him time to sort things out.”
“That’s right. If Noel genuinely wants to be with you, he’ll sort everything out. Don’t worry.”
After finishing their coffee, they left. Phoebe made sure Ines reached the Meyer Group safely before heading to work.
On her way to Ethan’s office, Ines ran into many senior executives of the Meyer Group. They all had a strange look in their eyes, which made her feel uneasy.
“Lucas, what’s going on? Why are they looking at me like that? It’s not like they’ve never seen me before,” Ines asked Lucas with a furrowed brow.
Lucas chuckled, “It’s probably because they were shocked by Mr. Meyer’s affectionate behavior towards you. Maybe they think you’re quite capable, taming a cold-hearted man like Mr. Meyer.”
The rumor that Ethan, a man of his status, had been inseparable from her and her child for the past two months was spreading like wildfire.
Ines gave Lucas a half-smile and changed the subject, “Lucas, you were quite heartless back then. You knew how I felt about Ethan, but you never helped me.”
Lucas stiffened. “Madam, you’re joking. I didn’t know anything.”
“How could you not? You saw us together several times.”
Lucas quickly changed the subject, “Let’s not dwell on the past, madam. Mr. Meyer is waiting for you upstairs.”
“Lucas, you’re so easy to tease,” Ines replied. She knew that helping Ethan was part of his job, so she couldn’t blame him for the past.
Once inside Ethan’s office, she noticed the pile of paperwork on his desk. It was clear that taking care of her had taken a toll on his workload. Ines quietly approached Ethan from behind, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Honey, let me help you.”
Ethan smiled, patting her hand. “Are you sure you’re not tired?”
“I’m not tired. See how radiant I look?”
Ethan looked at her, noticing the natural blush on her cheeks. “Are you sure you’re not tired?”
Ines thought Ethan doubted her. “I’m not tired at all. I’m full of energy. I can help you with the paperwork.”
