Silvia had finally made her way back to the city, but she couldn’t shake the feeling of a shadow trailing her, like a persistent tail she couldn’t lose. This feeling had been gnawing at her for two days, and it was starting to get under her skin. She longed for the moment when she could finally shake off the man who was tailing her.
Her phone line had long been tapped by Russel, and he even forced her to resort to getting a new SIM card under a different name.
Unable to have a face-to-face conversation with Maria, Silvia could only communicate through phone calls. However, Maria was still pretending to be out of her wits, thus avoiding any calls from unknown numbers. After numerous unanswered calls, Silvia had no choice but to send a message: [It’s Silvia. We need to talk. Answer my call.]
On the other side, a message quickly popped up in response. [Silvia, you’ve got the nerve to call me after you’ve deceived me so badly. You must be Russel’s spy, planted by his side to monitor me.] Maria was sitting on her bed, clutching her phone with an expression that seemed to wish she could devour the sender of the message.
Her husband had tormented her for years. Her own brother had chosen his own interests over hers at a crucial moment. The only psychologist she trusted turned out to be a product of her husband’s infidelity.
Her phone buzzed again, but Maria tossed it aside, choosing to ignore it. However, when Silvia called once more, and kept calling when she didn’t answer, Maria couldn’t contain her anger anymore. She answered the phone and snapped, “You little bitch, you think this is funny?”
“Ma’am, you’re overthinking things. I’m not calling to make fun of you. I want to continue our partnership against Russel as we previously agreed.”
“You think I’m a fool to trust you now? I’m not that desperate.” Maria retorted.
“Ma’am, I’m the joke here, not you. I’m not in a position to ridicule anyone else.” Silvia replied with a self-deprecating tone that seemed out of place.
Taken aback, Maria didn’t know why Silvia would say something like that. The Silvia she knew was always cheerful and professional during their therapy sessions. After a moment of silence, Maria asked, “What do you mean?”
“I want to continue our fight against Russel, just as we agreed to do before. I don’t work for him, and I’ve never told him about your recovery. I’ve been keeping it a secret, helping you stay under his radar. If I were working for him, you wouldn’t be here, living your life in peace.”
Maria thought about it and realized Silvia might be telling the truth. If Silvia was working for Russel, she would have told him about her recovery by now. And yet, Maria was still living in relative peace with no interference from Russel.
However, Maria was not ready to trust Silvia yet. “I still don’t believe you.”
