“Sorry, Eda. I didn’t mean to,” Aiden muttered. His head slightly bowed.
“I knew Emma would only attract trouble when it comes to you. I don’t want you around her anymore. She’s been nothing but unlucky since you divorced. Can’t you just leave her alone and let her live in peace?” Eda glared at Aiden. Her tone was seething with anger.
“Eda, I...” Aiden began, but Eda cut him off. “Save it. I don’t want to talk to you. Jasmine is taking a nap upstairs. If you want to see her, go ahead. But don’t linger here. Just a heads up though. Jasmine wakes up cranky. She’ll wail if anyone wakes her up abruptly.”
Emma sat quietly on the side, making no attempt to mediate the situation. She used to stand up for Aiden when her family was against him, but now, she couldn’t care less.
Aiden glanced at the silent Emma, with a flicker of hurt flashing in his eyes. Just as Aiden was about to head upstairs, the housemaid, Mary, brought Jasmine down. The little girl had just woken up and was lazily yawning with her hand over her mouth. She curled up like a drowsy kitten, and it made Emma break into a smile.
“Come to mama, sweetie.”
Mary handed Jasmine over to Emma, who kissed the little girl’s face, causing Jasmine to rub her cheek with a hint of distaste.
“Look at you, you little girl,” Emma laughed, pinching her daughter’s nose. “I’m your mom. You can’t start avoiding me at this age. What will happen when you grow up?”
Emma showered her with kisses, making Jasmine pout. Emma couldn’t help but laugh at her daughter’s expression, and Jasmine broke into giggles.
After the laughter subsided, Jasmine wrapped her arms around Emma’s neck and planted a soft kiss on her face. “Mama.”
“You little troublemaker. You know just how to make me feel better.” Emma beamed. Her head was resting against her daughter’s. She was completely oblivious to Aiden’s presence nearby.
Aiden watched them. His eyes welled up. Jasmine was so young, but she was already able to call Emma “mama”. She was so adorable that it was absolutely charming. In the short period that he hadn’t seen her, she seemed to have grown a lot and become even more endearing.
Aiden longed to hold her soft little body and tell her that he was her dad, but seeing Emma and Jasmine playing so happily together, he couldn’t bear to interrupt.
Eda laid a large blanket in the living room and scattered a few toys on it. Emma placed Jasmine on the blanket, and the little girl started crawling around, occasionally grabbing a toy and looking up at the adults.
“Our little Jasmine is so smart. She’s already crawling at this age. She’s going to be a bright child when she grows up,” Eda said proudly.
Jasmine, oblivious to the conversation, continued crawling around, amusing everyone in the room.
Aiden stood on the sidelines, not daring to disrupt the moment. He feared that his sudden intrusion would ruin the warm atmosphere.
“Eda, doesn’t Jasmine need a bottle after her nap?”
