Kieran’s symptoms that day were officially determined to be a reaction to drug use.
With that, the suspicions surrounding Karina were finally cleared.
Still, Kieran refused to admit it. “I didn’t use drugs! This is a setup! Karina, we’ve treated you well, and this is how you repay us? Are you even human?”
As the police dragged him away, he resisted with all his might, making a noisy scene that filled the hospital with chaos.
The hallways were packed with onlookers, their curious and judgmental gazes bouncing between Karina and Kieran, accompanied by endless murmurs.
But Karina didn’t care anymore. She looked at Kieran, her eyes steady and clear. “Yes, you all gave me a place to live, but so what? I’ve already repaid that debt. Six million—it’s been paid back in full.”
Six million.
For a wealthy family, it might not seem like much, but for her, it was an astronomical figure. She had no idea how many years it had taken her to gather that amount.
And what had the Stones ever spent on her? Forget six million—they might not have even spent fifty thousand. She had earned her own tuition and covered her own living expenses.
Had the Stone family ever taken care of her, even in the slightest?
The only person she had felt attached to was Tara.
But Tara was gone, and with her, any reason Karina had to hold on to that family.
Kieran shouted loudly, “And what about my sister? Her death and my leg injury—aren’t those your fault? Don’t you owe us for that?”
At the mention of Tara, Karina’s heart throbbed with pain, reopening a wound that never fully healed. Her body trembled slightly.
The uncertainty in Karina’s heart vanished the moment she thought of Wilfred, as if a firm hand had wiped it clean.
In truth, many things didn’t require his direct involvement. She could have confronted Kieran herself and forced him to take the test. But Wilfred had stepped in anyway.
She hadn’t thought much of it at the time, but now, as the details surfaced in her mind, she realized that perhaps he did it for her. He was teaching her how to handle people like Kieran.
When dealing with a bully, one had to be tougher than they were.
