Chapter 17 

“Babe,” Tyler whispered, still on his knees, waiting for Hailey to answer his proposal. 

He saw her lips move but no word came out of it. 

“T….Tyler….” she said his name, but not knowing what to say next. 

“Please make me the happiest man in the world.” 

“Fuck you and stay the hell away from my wife!” The familiar voice came through. 

Looking up, they both saw that it was Cole. Before Hailey could say a word, he grabbed her by her arm and reached for her purse with his other hand. He was about to take her away when Tyler intervened, rising to his feet. People recognized Cole and at this point, more people started taking pictures and recording videos. 

“What the hell are you doing?” Hailes mumbled, trying to wriggle herself away from him. 

“Let go of me!!!!!” 

“Let her go.” Tyler approached them but Cole pushed him away and in that process, the ring fell to the floor. 

“Can you just stop this!” Hailey said to Cole, still trying her best to release herself from his hold. 

“I’m sorry if this hurts you but I’m never letting this asshole have you.” He said, then turned his attention to the little audience around. “This woman is my wife and this is me urging all men to stay the hell away from her.” 

“I wronged her in the past and that is why she hates me. But I love her too much to lose her to this man or to anyone else. She is my woman and any man that comes close to her would end up behind bars.” Cole said, then pulled Hailey in a forceful but polite way out of the restaurant. He didn’t let her go until they were by his car. 

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Her hand landed across his cheek before she could help herself. 

“Get mad at me all you want but I won’t let you end up with that man or anyone else.” 

“You don’t own me! Why the hell did you embarrass me and my fiance?” 

“You are still my wife and I’ve got the marriage certificate to prove that!”

“And please, you should be thankful instead of being mad at me! It was so obvious that you weren’t going to accept his damn proposal. So be happy I saved you from being in a tight spot.” 

“Just shut your mouth, Cole. You are still as egoistic as I remember. You’ve got no right to invade my privacy. Whether or not I intend to accept the proposal is none of your damn business!” 

“I am not your wife and I would never return to you so stay the hell away from me.” 

Hailey was about to walk away when Cole cornered her by the car. “If I can’t have you, then no one else can.”

“What the hell has come over you? Can you just let me be? Can’t we go back to the times where you don’t give a fuck about me?” 

“I made a terrible mistake. I was stupid to ignore you but now I’m back to make amends. I love you so much and I can’t let you slip away from me. I am not asking you to take me back with warm arms. I know you have every right to be pissed with me but just give me the chance to make it up to you.” 

“I don’t care if he is the father to your children. I want you back and I am going to take care of them as if they were my own.” 

“Please just accept me back!” 

“I hate you and I want nothing to do with you! Stay the fuck away from me and my affairs!” Hailey snatched her purse from him, glared at him, and stormed away. 

Hardly had she left his car side when she saw Tyler coming out of the restaurant looking embarrassed and in so much pain. 

Her heart instantly went out to him. “Ty.” She went after him as he approached his car. 

“Ty, please wait.” 

He ignored, making his way to the driver’s seat. 

“Tyler?!” 

“Let go.” He shrugged his hand from her and was about to open the door to the car when she spoke. 

“I’m sorry!”

He turned around so he could look into her eyes. 

“For?”

“Please, Ty.” She said with pleading eyes, not liking the way he was being so cold to her. This was something she had never experienced. She couldn’t stand the pain in his eyes either. 

“What exactly are you sorry for, Hailey?” 

“For your ex embarrassing me? No doubt I’m going to be a meme by midnight because of the number of people that have taken videos and pictures. What was meant to be a sweet moment turned into ridicule.” 

“I’m so sorry, Ty. You know this isn’t my fault too. I don’t know what Cole was doing here. I don’t know how he found me.” 

“You know about my past. You know I don’t want anything to do with him. He is just trying to pry into my life.” 

“Would you have accepted my proposal if he hadn’t shown up?” He asked, staring at Hailey intently. 

She swallowed painfully. 

“Answer my question, Hailes. Would you have accepted my proposal?” 

“Please don’t take this the wrong way, Tyler. I adore you!” 

“You adore me, So What next?” 

“We have been together for three long years, Hailey. How much more time do you need? I loved you every day of my life, I treat you well. I love Enzo and Ollie with every fucking breath that I take. I put you first even when you don’t do the same for me but I never take that against you.” 

“I’ve had that ring with me for Seven months now. Every time I want to propose, I chicken out, thinking you were not ready, and today that I finally got the courage, look what happened. I should have kept my damn mouth shut and gone to hell with my feelings.” 

“Please don’t talk that way, Ty.” At this point, Hailey could feel tears forming in her eyes. 

“What now? You want to keep me in your life as a puppet and never reciprocate the same energy I give you?”

“Stop saying that, Ty You know I deeply care about you. I would do anything you ask of me.” 

“Really? But you can’t say YES to spending your forever with me?“” 

“There is just so much going on and I need more time.” 

“How much more time do you need to heal? You still love that bastard and it is so clear.” 

At this point, a tear rolled down Hailey’s cheek. “No, I don’t.” 

“Oh, yes you do, Hailey” 

“Four years is enough to move on from a gold digger that never treated you right! But for some weird and unknown reasons you still feel something for him.” 

“I feel nothing but hatred for Cole, I promise you. I’ve just been really traumatized by the relationship that being 

in another one scares me.” 

“You think I am going to be a beast like your ex? Or should I say your husband since you both are not divorced 

yet?” 

“I can imagine what’s going to be in the headlines tomorrow. A young man proposing to the wife of Cole 

Matthis.” 

“That sounds more hurtful than you think. You of all people should know that my past hurts me more than anything and it isn’t my fault that Cole stormed in to cause chaos.” 

“What would have changed? Would you have accepted to be my wife If he didn’t intrude?” 

“Fine, I will marry you. Where’s the ring?” She sniffled. 

Tyler shook his head. “I would rather die than allow you to marry me out of pity.” 

“You should go back to your husband!” He gestured towards Cole who was standing a couple of steps away from them, then got into his car, ignoring Hailey’s plea. 

Hailey was about to make her way towards her car when she saw Cole take steps towards her. She glared at him. 

“Don’t you dare come close to me!”

“Please, Hailey, Let’s talk. I’m sorry. I know I am annoying but you give me no choice.” 

“I want nothing to do with you. Don’t you get it?!” 

“I know you are angry but please can we talk?” 

“I want nothing to do with you!” She ignored Cole, got into her car, and drove off.

“Where the hell do you think you are going?” Vanessa’s voice came through just when he had forgotten that he actually didn’t come here alone.” 

He turned around and saw her approach him. 

“Hailey needs me.” 

“What has come over you, Cole? Not only did you humiliate yourself there, but you are also going after someone who has made it clear she wants nothing to do with you. What the hell, Cole?” 

“Sorry if I humiliated you but that is going to be on you because we both know that I feel nothing for you.” 

“I know what it feels like to lose a good woman and I am not going to let that repeat itself.” 

“Take a taxi home and send me the bill.” Cole got into his car and drove off. 

“No! This is not happening to me.” Vanessa shook her head as tears began to roll down her cheeks. 

“You all can’t keep messing with my feelings.” She opened her purse, took out her phone, and with shak She dialed a number.

“I don’t care what you do to her, James. Just follow her and get rid of her. I want her out of our lives as soon as possible.” She cried over the phone.

Hailey had no idea why but tears couldn’t stop rolling down her cheeks as she drove. She didn’t regret hitting
