Chapter 19 

She was still putting on the dress she wore at the restaurant but had changed her heels into comfy flip–flops. 

Debbie rose to her feet and approached Vanessa before she could come too close to Hailey’s bedside. “What the hell are you doing here?” 

“I don’t know who you are but stay the hell out of this!” She was about to go to Hailey but Debbie blocked her. “Take your leave!” She pointed towards the door. 

“There is no way I am leaving here without dealing with that bitch! It is because of her that my Husband is in surgery!” 

“No babes, leave this to me” Debbie stopped Hailey before she could say anything. Instantly, She pulled Vanessa by her hair and dragged her out of Hailey’s ward, ignoring the cry of pain that left her lips. 

Debbie only let go of her hair when they were outside the ward. She pushed Vanessa against the sofa that was 

nearby. 

“Do not ever mess with Hailey again!!” 

“Who the hell are you and why did you pull my hair.” She rose to her feet, about to hit Debble on the cheek but Debbie caught her hand halfway and pushed her back on the sofa, this time around really hard.

“I told Hailey I was going to murder you with my bare hands if I should ever see you but the reason being casual with you is because we are at the hospital. Who the hell do you think you are to always pick on my 

best friend?” 

“She almost killed my husband! She is the reason Cole was shut in his arms.” Vanessa said at the top of her voice, 

trying to hold back her tears. 

“And you think we all don’t know this is all an act so no one is going to suspect you?” 

“I don’t understand what you are talking about!” 

“Come on girl. You can fool anyone but you can’t fool me. You and your fucking mother are the only enemy that Hailey has. I’m sure you both had a hand in this. You are here to make things up and act like you care so no one’s 

going to suspect you.”

“I won’t tolerate you lying against me! Hailey is a murderer and a homewrecker. I will make sure she pays for what she did to me and Cole.” 

“You know I really admire your guts. You sound so courageous despite being so guilty for a lot of things.” 

“Hailey may be calm but I promise you that I’m crazier than you and on that note, I won’t let you mess with my friend.” 

“For heaven’s sake, if not that you are a freak, why would you blame Hailey for Cole running after her? Isn’t he her husband?” 

“Cole is mine and we are going to get married. Kept your mouth off my family matter!” She glared at Debbie from where she was seated on the couch, breathing heavily. 

Debbie shook her head in disbelief. “All I see is a bittered and failed woman. You are surprised that Hailey is still thriving hun? You and your mom try to take advantage but she is way ahead of you all.” 

“Cole took a bullet for her but can he do the same for you?” 

“Lies!!!! She pushed him. That is why the bullet hit him.” 

Debbie had no idea when a peal of laughter escaped her lips. “Is that what the culprit told you?” 

Vanessa continued to glare at Debbie. 

“Your life is filled with nothing but sadness. You must be so pained that after all the schemes you tried to put in place, Cole still chooses Hailey over you.” 

“Cole doesn’t like her. He likes me and I’m going to fight for him.” 

“All the best baby! Because I know no one is going to end up with a manic like you.” 

“What’s going on here?” Tyler approached the duo, holding a cup of coffee. 

Vanessa saw him and rose to her feet. 

“You can’t even keep your woman. You should be ashamed of yourself!” 

“Excuse me?!” Tyler frowned.

“Why propose to her now when you should have done that long ago?” 

“Are you out of your mind? What gives you the fucking right to interfere in my business?” 

“You don’t have to flare up! Just take your girl so my man can come back to me!” 

“What the hell are you even doing here?” Tyler glared at her, trying his best to manage his anger. 

“Cole is my husband and I am here to see him.” 

‘His ward is on the other side. You’ve got no business here so stay the fuck away!” 

“Whatever! Just make sure she doesn’t come near my Cole.” Vanessa said, storming off. 

Tyler sighed, massaging his temple. He was still in his proposal suit but had taken off his jacket. 

“I wish Hailey didn’t take over that damn company!” Tyler mumbled, taking closer steps to Debbie. 

“I wish so too. They are the worst thing that could ever happen to her.” 

“I was wondering how she got in when you were supposed to be outside.”

“Fuck! Did She disturb Hailey? I was getting insane downing in my thoughts so I had to get myself some coffee.” 

“It’s fine. I was able to get rid of her before she became a nuisance.” 

“Was she at the restaurant?” Debbie referred to Vanessa. 

“I had no idea. I was so embarrassed and angry to take note of the people that were there. I’m sure I would be trending already online. Everyone’s going to think I am stupid and that I am deliberately chasing another man’s wife.” 

“Cole went too far, I admit.” 

“And I’m sorry, I know I was harsh to you earlier. Hailey explained all that happened.” 

“It’s fine. I can live with the shame. I just want her to be okay.” 

“You are a good man, you know right?”

“Please I would appreciate it if we don’t talk about that,” Ty mumbled, taking a sip of his coffee. 

“It hurts to hear but I want you to know that all of this isn’t your fault.” 

“And Hailey feels terrible about it too.” 

“Life sucks doesn’t it? The bad guy gets the woman of my dreams while I get nothing.” 

“Don’t speak that way.” 

“I am not blaming anyone. I just feel so bad for myself and it upsets me how life can be so unfair.” 

“Hailey isn’t going back to him.” 

“You don’t know that. He saved her life. I feel so jealous and so stupid that he took a bullet for her when it should. have been me.” 

“They probably have a connection that I can never relate with. He is such a lucky bastard.” 

“I almost lost it the first time I saw him. The twins look so much like him. Most especially Enzo. Cole is never going to allow me to be their stepdad.” 

“I don’t know what to say but I am really sorry about everything.” 

“You should know that Hailey is also not happy with everything going on.” 

Tyler groaned, massaging his temple with his free hand. “I should have gotten some alcohol and not this damn coffee. I was afraid they were going to send me away from the hospital if they saw me drinking.” 

“Hailey is an amazing woman. My mom is going to be broken to know that I wasn’t good enough to make her my 

I wife.” 

“I really like her. She is the best gift life gave me. The thought of her being with another man kills me already. God knows I would do anything to have her by my side.” 

Debbie’s heart went out to Tyler as she could see the pain in his eyes. 

“So you giving up?”

“And how many times has she rejected Cole?” 

“I don’t know. But a lot!” 

“And he keeps coming back after her.” 

Tyler was silent as he thought for a while.

“I don’t know. I think the situation is different. They are still married and they have two kids. And even though, Hailey accepts me. Cole is going to keep showing up because of the twins. I wish things were really different.” 

“From what I can see, you are the one making excuses in your head.” 

“The truth hurts but even though I keep pretending to everyone, I need to tell myself the truth right?” 

“It has been three years and I couldn’t even get a valid YES from her. I know I am just a failure.”

“Yeah, yeah!” He mumbled, taking a couple of sips from his cup. 

“I already called the nanny that Hailey wouldn’t be coming home so she should take care of the boys.” 

“Thank you.” 

“Yeah, that is the least I could do to make sure everyone is okay.” 

“You don’t need to be too hard on yourself. You heard the police earlier. This isn’t an accident.” 

“It’s insane that someone would want Hailey dead. She is literally the most stress–free person I know.” 

“I wish she didn’t reunite with her family but her good heart wouldn’t let her be.” 

“I said the same too.” 

“Have you heard any news about Cole?”

“I don’t care but I know he is going to be fine. It’s just a bullet on his arm.” 

“Just?” Debbie said, staring at him intently. 

“Yeah, he lost quite some blood too. Look I don’t wish him bad, I just wish he would walk out of our lives forever. But again, I love the twins so much and I know they would want nothing more than to meet their biological father one day.” 

“The point is, why didn’t I meet Hailey first instead of that gold digger?!!” Tyler sighed, plopping down on the 

sofa. 

“Mom, I messed up, Mom!” Vanessa cried over the phone. 

“I got your text. I told you not to do anything without consulting me. What the hell came over you?”
