"Ella, please don't blame me. Just as I would never blame you for that night.
Don't you remember that you said you wished I'd listen to you more? I promise you, I will. And I'll be better to you after we take care of this. I'll do whatever you want me to.
Ella, I love you..."
Samuel mumbled in her ears softly until he heard her steady breath. Then he got out of the bed and tucked Ella in before leaving the nursery room.
Ella was pretending to be in sound sleep, and as soon as Samuel left, she opened her eyes.
There was both sorrow and hatred oozing from her eyes in the dark.
She hated Samuel for choosing not to believe her.
They had their ups and downs before, and she didn't care to fuss about them, for they were all trifles. However, he had turned his back on her on such an important matter.
What else could she say or do? To find Sum to help prove her innocence?
That would never work. Ella knew if she involved Sum, Samuel would only knock him down the minute he saw him. And by doing that, Samuel would be convinced that Sum was the real father of the baby inside her.
To say the least, even if Ella really had been raped, how could Samuel be sure that she got pregnant on that night?
All in all, it went back to the original point. Maybe deep down he just didn't love her.
Maybe he loved Emma or Catherine, but clearly not her.
Ella's tears began to fall, yet again, and soon left nothing but water stains on her pillow.
She then thought to herself, 'Samuel, you are such a disappointment.'
In the study.
Standing motionlessly in front of the window, Samuel dialed a number on his phone.
"Sam." Chuck had just taken off his overalls after finishing a surgery. And there was another one waiting for him in a few minutes. He was taking a break in between when Samuel called.
"Chuck, do you have any time tomorrow?" Now that they had decided to have the abortion. The sooner they got it done, the better.
Chuck then reviewed his schedule in mind. He did have time in the afternoon, but he had promised someone to go shopping with her.
"What's the matter?" But Samuel wouldn't just call him for nothing. So Chuck decided to hear Samuel out first before making any further decisions.
Samuel fell silent. Instead of answering Chuck, he took the packet of cigarettes out of his pocket, put one into his mouth and lit it.
After taking a draw on his cigarette, Samuel then said, "I want you to arrange a surgery for Ella."
Chuck paused in surprise, "For Ella? What's going on with her? Is she not feeling well?" Chuck was quite sure that he had never heard of Ella being sick lately.
Samuel exhaled the smoke and took another hard draw silently to calm himself down, "She's pregnant. Six weeks. So the conception was last month when she was kidnapped."
Neither of them said anything to break the awkward silence.
Chuck had seen how badly Ella looked when she was sent to the hospital. Even he couldn't say for sure that whether she was hurt or not.
"So you suspect it might not be yours?"
Outside the window, snow was swirling through the air. It was the first sight of snow in that year.
However, no one was in the mood to enjoy the delicateness and prettiness of the first snow of that winter, including Daisy, who had just found the divorce papers in one of the drawers in Chuck's apartment. And it was already signed. She was still trying to recover from the shock.
"Yes. It's fifty-fifty. But I can't take the risk and let her keep this baby."
Holding the cigarette with his index and middle finger, Samuel stopped and stared at the burning end of his cigarette in the dark.
"Did Ella agree with you?" Chuck sighed and asked about Ella. He knew Samuel did have a point.
Thinking of how uncommonly accommodating Ella was at the end of their last conversation, Samuel wasn't sure what she was really thinking about. Then he said, "Yes... I'll bring her to the hospital tomorrow."
"Fine. Two in the afternoon, I'll be here for you. But Samuel, are you really sure about this?" Chuck knew what Samuel meant by saying it was fifty-fifty. Samuel showed up at the last minute and helped Ella with the drug that night.
Samuel stood in front of the window and was lost in his own thoughts for a long while after hanging up the phone and stubbing out the cigarette.
He didn't go to work at his company the next morning and spent the whole morning home with Ella.
