Tanya put on her earphones and listened to music. She heard Tiffany’s voice but did not respond.
For some strange reason, she felt an almost indiscernible feeling. She despised how Tiffany handled things, and felt a slight hint of envy and confusion. At the end of the day, Tiffany was a born and bred citizen of the capital. Big city girls seemed to come pre-installed with their own halo — she didn’t need to work hard; her circle was in a class above her own.
No matter how hard she tried, she was no different from Beckett, unable to fully assimilate herself into the group. Regardless of how grand it seemed on the surface, deep down, she was always caught in a bitter struggle. She didn’t even have the basic right of setting up and buying a home in the city. No, she wouldn’t even have the money for a downpayment, even if she worked hard for the rest of her life. Tiffany, on the other hand, had everything handed to her on a silver platter. Unfortunately, she did not appreciate it. She refused Jackson, an outstanding man who was vying for her affections, yet was still somehow involved with him despite their break up. Meanwhile, she kept in touch with Alejandro too.
She remembered one thing that Beckett had mentioned — his ideal woman was a native to the capital, not a naive idiot like her… The meaning behind the words “naive idiot” probably included “small town hillbilly”, right? The desire for a better life was basically ingrained in every human being. She was no different.
She had always been content with her life, enjoying her simple life in a small city… That is, until she met Tiffany and Arianne. It was different now. She wanted to assimilate into the capital, a big city, and become like Arianne and Tiffany. She wanted to be as confident as they were, meeting all sorts of men with ease, with no need of feeling inferior. Unfortunately, her inferiority complex had long been carved into her very bones. She had been tortured by her penniless state from a young age, her heart now riddled with wounds. She used to think that a simple and happy life was good enough for her, but now, it was a messy part of her past that she no longer wanted to experience again.
On the way to Jackson’s place, Tiffany stumbled over her words before asking, “Do you think that people can change?” She was referring to Tanya, for she had picked up on something during their conversation back in the office. Tanya did not answer her when she left the house too.
