Dear Ex-Wife Please Be Mine Again (Christina and Alex) novel Chapter 194

Chapter 194 Alex's POV.

I s a t a c r o s s from Detective Carter in a small diner that smelled like burnt coffee and grease. He had already been nursing a cup of black coffee when I arrived, his coat spread over the back of his chair. His face was hard to read, but l'd known Carter long enough to tell when he was holding something back.

"Appreciate you meeting me again," I said, folding my arms on the table. "I need answers, Carter. Now."

He leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his thinning hair. His lips pressed into a thin line before he sighed. "I wish I had more to give you, Alex. We're still digging, but the pieces aren't adding up just yet."

I clenched my jaw. "Tell me what you've got."

Carter set his coffee cup down and tapped the edge of the table with his fingers, his brows furrowed. "All the inmates who were eating with Daniel that day have been questioned. Every single one of them swears they don't know anything. Either they're all damn good liars, or they're truly clueless."

I narrowed my eyes, leaning forward. "So, someone slipped poison into his food, and no one saw a thing?"

Carter held my gaze, his expression grim. "That's exactly what it looks like. Whoever did this had the upper hand. They knew what they were doing, Alex. And they were careful. No mistakes, no witnesses, nothing left behind."

I let out a slow breath, trying to keep the frustration from boiling over. "You're telling me there's not a single lead? Not one person with a motive?"

Carter shook his head. "Oh, there are plenty of people with motives. Daniel wasn't exactly a saint. But nothing solid connects anyone to the poisoning. Not yet, anyway. We're still looking into the guards, the kitchen staff, anyone who had access to the food."

I could feel the muscles in my jaw tighten as I processed his words. "And what about the other inmates? No suspicious behavior? No changes in their routines?"

Carter shrugged. "Some of them were scared out of their minds, thinking they might be next. Others acted like it was just another day in prison. But scared or not, none of them had anything useful to say."

I sat back in my chair, my mind racing. Daniel was no innocent victim, but someone had gone to great lengths to silence him.

Someone who didn't want him to face trial. Someone who didn't want him talking.

"Whoever did this"" I said slowly, my voice low, "they wanted to make s u r e he never s a w the inside of a courtroom."

Carter nodded, his expression dark. "That's what I'm thinking too.

And that means we're not just dealing with some random act of violence. This was planned."

I rubbed a hand over my face, the weight of the situation pressing down on me. "And you've got nothing? No leads, no suspects?"

Carter's jaw tightened. "Not yet. But I'm not letting this go, Alex. I'll find whoever's behind this. You have my word."

I studied him for a moment, trying to gauge how far he was willing to go. Carter was a good detective, one of the best, but this wasn't just any case. This was personal.
