Hector POV 

“She’s not here!” I bitterly reply.

“If she was, would you tell me?” He steps out of his car, resting his back against his now closed door. “Honestly, no. If she has run away from you, it is for a good reason. I won’t pretend to know her as well as you, but I think I at least know her that well enough…now get the fuck off my lands!” I roar out. 

These are my lands, lands I had secured and protected off my own back, not because they were handed down to me through a family. 

I had gone to business school to work in the human business markets, letting the thought of ever being an alpha leave me a long time ago. Then when I returned a few days before his 18th birthday to discover she was my mate…I just knew the only way to ever get her away from him, would be to be an alpha. 

To rival him in pack size and strength, to safe her from him.

My wolf whimpers in my head from my realisation. Know it makes sense. Why every time he shifts we end up in that meadow, he was pining for her… he missed her too. 

I turn my back on him, I am done. I mind–link Ezra to ensure his car, with him in it, leaves our lands as soon as I am gone. If not, my chosen beta has my permission to use force. 

I walk to my own car, opening the door when Than mutters something under his breath. Something that makes me stop dead in my tracks….that makes my blood run cold. 

“What?” I grunt, hoping I misheard. 

“She’s dying. The wolfsbane has left her with organ failure. She found out. Found out what my head doctor and I was keeping from her, she’s left…only leaving me a note.” 

Black dots cover my vision and hot burning acid starts to work its way up to the back of my throat…dying. 

She was dying and now had vanished…her own Alpha not knowing where she was. Her own mate. In my lapse of control my wolf surges forward…taking his anger out on Than. 

“How long have you known?” I growl out, stalking back towards him…and pushing him against his car 

door. 

“I’ve known for some time, even when she was in the coma. It was reported that she would need medical intervention, the machines were the reason she was still alive.”

“How could you keep that from her?” My hands push against his chest again only this time he has some fight back in him, pushing me back at my own chest. 

“What would you have done, told her? I hoped she wouldn’t know, that I would have found her the cure before her even realising.” 

I don’t know what I would have done. But I wouldn’t have kept it from her, declared my undying love for her yet chase my ex wife at the same time. 

“I don’t know what you expect me to do with this?” Why is he telling me now, why the fuck didn’t he tell me when she woke up. 

“Nothing, I’m just trying to prepare you for when the time comes. That you will feel the loss of the mate connection.” He raises his voice to me. 

“I’ve already prepared myself for that when you mark her. Why haven’t you marked her?” I match his raised voice reminding him who was the true alpha here. (1) 

He turns his back on me, unwilling to answer my valid question. I won’t let him drop this bomb on me and walk away with his legs still attached.
