Even though Chloe and Jacob's relationship had grown distant, he'd been her dad for twenty years. In moments like this, Chloe couldn't just stand by and do nothing.
At around one in the afternoon, Director Zhao showed up. He was super polite to Connor and then handed things over to Dr. Fink. The operating room and all the pre-surgery arrangements were already set up.
The surgery lasted two hours and went off without a hitch. Leah finally felt a massive wave of relief wash over her. Turning to Chloe, with tears in her eyes, she said, "Chloe, thank you."
Chloe's response was a bit detached, "As long as everything's okay." But Leah noticed the genuine concern in Chloe's eyes when Jacob was wheeled into the operating room.
Chloe might seem distant, but deep down, her kindness hadn't just disappeared after two decades. Leah confessed, "Chloe, I'm sorry. These past three years, I've messed up so much. I never thought Lisa would do such awful things."
Leah truly regretted everything. She missed the good old days when the three of them were a happy family. But those days were gone for good.
Chloe replied calmly, "What Lisa did—drugging me—wasn't your doing. I won't blame you for her actions." Leah felt a flicker of happiness, but Chloe's distant tone and expression quickly dimmed it.
Since Chloe had accepted Ann, she'd changed a lot. Leah cautiously asked, "Chloe, do you still see me as your mom?"
"I acknowledge you, and I'll take care of you as you age. But that's where it ends. Just like how I made sure Dad was okay today. That's all I've got to give."
