Chloe was taken aback, though she only showed a slight frown. Leah spoke with a casual air, “The company couldn’t keep going. He sold off his last shares and even the old family home, all without me knowing. The next day, he took off to Japan with the money, leaving me just an apology letter.”

A touch of sarcasm played on Leah’s lips, “That’s when I found out he had another family in Japan, complete with a five-year-old son. No wonder he’d go on those long trips to Japan every year.”

Chloe was completely floored. This was something she hadn't seen coming. Leah pulled up a photo on her phone of the apology letter and handed it to Chloe.

Chloe read through the letter. It was a long one, going on about Jacob’s years of keeping things to himself, his helplessness, regret, and apologies. Each word was dripping with reluctance and guilt.

But after reading it, Chloe couldn’t help but find it painfully ironic. Words filled with guilt, yet he didn’t leave Leah a single penny. Chloe’s expression hardened, “I can help you track him down. Even if it leads to a divorce, you should at least get half.”

Leah had clearly given up, completely disenchanted. “Let it go. After sharing a life for over twenty years, it turns out I never really knew him. That’s on me, I made a bad call.”

Chloe noticed that some words in the photo were smudged, like tears had fallen on them. Leah must have cried over that letter countless times. Chloe was equally shaken. As she grew older, she saw her father’s true nature more clearly. But she never imagined he could be so utterly heartless.

Chloe’s heart went out to Leah. “Why don’t you come to Eldridge City and stay with me?”
