As Chloe sat in the car, she noticed something was off. The voice of the driver had changed completely. Earlier, it was the gruff voice of a middle-aged man, but now it sounded much younger, more familiar. She squinted into the rearview mirror, trying to get a better look at the face of the man behind the wheel. Those eyes – she knew those eyes anywhere.
"Barrett?" she exclaimed in shock.
The man wasn't just any driver; it was Barrett, cleverly disguised. His cover blown, Barrett dropped the act with a smirk. "I did take a few classes in special effects makeup, but you still caught on. You’ve got quite the keen eye, Chloe."
Chloe had to admit, Barrett's disguise was top-notch. He had perfectly embodied the image of an average middle-aged man. But those eyes, they gave him away. They were the same mischievous eyes she’d seen countless times before.
Barrett was one of Claire's followers, and the realization sent Chloe's heart racing. "Barrett, what are you up to?" she demanded, her voice edged with fear.
Barrett's tone was casual, almost friendly. "I'm just doing a little favor for Ms. Claire. Come on, Chloe, we're old friends. No need to make this hard on yourself."
Chloe's eyes darted around the car, searching for anything she could use to her advantage. But Barrett seemed to anticipate her every move.
"If you don’t play nice, I’ve got something that’ll put you right to sleep," he said, casually holding up a device that looked like a remote control. "See this? The car’s rigged. One press, and a sedative will knock you out cold."
He paused, letting the threat sink in. "And just so you know, this stuff isn’t exactly baby-friendly. So, I’d think twice before pushing my buttons."
