Chloe reluctantly pulled her phone from the pocket of her dress, her eyes scanning the caller ID. It was Connor. Instantly, Barrett tensed. He cracked open the window on her side and ordered, "Toss the phone out."
Chloe held the phone tightly, hesitating. Barrett reached for a remote control. "Chloe, think about the baby you’re carrying."
With a deep breath and no more hesitation, Chloe hurled the phone outside. Barrett then reached over and tossed a black hood into the backseat. "You're clever, Chloe, but I can't afford to trust you completely. Put the hood on."
"You should appreciate that not drugging you is already a kindness on my part."
Chloe nodded, picking up the hood. "I get it, but I'm curious. Why are you being so kind?"
She pulled the hood over her head without protest, her thoughts centered on the safety of her unborn child. Barrett's expression softened momentarily with a hint of sadness. He once had a child with Claire, but he'd tampered with things, and Claire didn’t hesitate to abandon that child. The memory was an old wound he carried silently. Later, Claire had him undergo a vasectomy, ending any hope of more children.
Barrett didn't know why he couldn’t bring himself to harm Chloe’s child. Maybe it was a way to atone for his past regrets. With a cynical laugh, he said, "Just because I'm showing mercy doesn't mean Claire will. You'd better brace yourself and not get your hopes up."
Chloe was indeed terrified. In the past, she might have been defiant, ready to fight back if needed. But now, thinking about the life growing inside her filled her with a fear she couldn't shake. Today was supposed to be a joyous day. She had planned to share this news with Connor that evening. But now, she wasn’t even sure she’d make it through whatever Claire had planned.
What scared her more was the thought of Claire using her to hurt Connor. Her mind was a whirlwind of fear and uncertainty.
