Finally, both of them were worn out. They stopped and leaned against a gigantic oak tree, so massive it would take at least seven or eight people to wrap their arms around its trunk. Sitting beneath its sprawling branches, Chloe rested her head on Connor's shoulder.
"Connor, any idea where we are?" Chloe asked.
Connor shook his head. "No clue. Could be some forest out west or maybe an island. The trees are so thick here, they block out the sky. Can't even see the stars to figure out where we are."
Chloe's heart sank a little. "Do you think they’ll find us?" she asked softly.
Connor gazed upwards. All he could see were the towering trees, packed together like a natural fortress. "I don't know. We just have to wait and see."
Chloe squeezed Connor's hand. "No matter what happens, we stick together. As long as you're with me, I'm not scared."
Connor turned to her, gently brushing her cheek. "I won't let anything happen to you."
"You should try to get some rest," Connor suggested tenderly.
Chloe leaned against him and dozed off, but it wasn’t long before she was jolted awake by eerie howls echoing through the trees. Connor stood up too, instinctively moving to shield Chloe behind him.
Chloe quickly snapped to attention, noticing the eerie glow of green eyes all around them. She slowly stood up, realizing they were surrounded by a pack of wolves. The wolves' howls sent chills down her spine, and she could tell there were at least a dozen of them.
