Chloe and Connor didn't stand a chance at escaping. In no time, they were hemmed in by a couple of SUVs. The burly bodyguards behind the vehicles were jeering like they'd just caught their prey. Before long, Chloe and Connor were tied up and tossed into the back of one of the cars. You could see the flicker of despair on Chloe's face. "It was my shot that gave us away," she realized. If she hadn’t fired, they might not have been found so fast. Now, being caught meant facing something out of a nightmare. But back there, if she hadn’t pulled the trigger, Connor could have ended up with his throat torn out.
Connor sat in the back, looking dazed. Even with the gunfire, their capture was way too fast. What did that mean? And those wolves… They looked vicious and starved, but right after Chloe fired, one collapsed right onto him. When he pushed it off, he noticed a tag on its ear. A tagged wolf wasn’t a wild one. These wolves were bred and brought here on purpose. Suddenly, Connor felt like he was trapped in some twisted reality show, where their "escape" was just a cruel game.
Chloe noticed Connor looking lost and shaken. She squeezed his hand tight. "Connor, what's up?" Connor shook himself out of it and forced a smile. "I'm fine," he said, though it was clear he wasn't.
After an hour of jarring travel, they were back at the rundown shack. Claire didn’t show. Connor saw her again the following evening. She strolled into his room with a snide grin. "Quite the stunt you pulled last night, escaping and all," she taunted. Connor smirked. "Must’ve been quite the feat to bring in a whole pack of wolves, huh?" Claire looked a bit taken aback but then smirked knowingly. "You're too clever for your own good. That takes the fun out of it."
Connor locked eyes with her. "Claire, why are you doing this?" he demanded. Claire chuckled. "Do you even know where you are?" she replied. "I was kidnapped and brought here years ago. Like you, I tried to escape over and over, only to be chased by beasts and bitten by snakes. But it always ended the same—caught like a mouse by a cat."
She grabbed Connor’s collar. "Do you know what that kind of despair feels like?" Connor grinned weakly. "Of course I do. What will it take for you to let us go?" Claire stood up, turning away. "Connor, the real show hasn’t even started. Don’t throw in the towel just yet."
Fear flickered in Connor’s eyes. "What are you planning?" he asked. Claire pressed her nails into his neck, leaving a stinging mark. "You’ll find out soon enough," she said. Claire had run out of patience—time was ticking, and the longer this dragged on, the riskier it got. The Sartori and Shaw families were flipping the world upside down looking for them. She’d spent all night thinking it over. Tonight, it all had to end.
Claire ordered Connor to be tied up and brought to Chloe’s room. Chloe was also bound, sitting helplessly on the bed. Seeing this, Connor tried to rush over but was held back by two mercenaries.
