Connor asked, "What's going on?"
Chloe replied, her voice a bit shaky, "Mom's in the hospital, and it's serious."
She was still trying to wrap her head around everything. Just a moment ago, Winston had given her the news that the hospital had issued a critical condition notice. They had called her because they were afraid she might not get a chance to see her mom one last time.
Connor knew that when Chloe said "mom," she meant Ruby. But he was completely baffled. Ruby's always been the picture of health. Just a few days ago, she was on TV, championing the welfare of orphaned children. How could she suddenly be fighting for her life in a hospital?
Winston hadn't gone into details over the phone. Chloe and Connor quickly got up and rushed to the hospital.
Everyone was gathered outside the emergency room. Neil was slumped on a bench in the hallway. Chloe had never seen him look so lost and devastated. In her mind, Neil was always as solid as a rock—calm, unflappable, the kind of man who could handle anything life threw at him. But now, he seemed as vulnerable as a child, sitting there with trembling hands and red-rimmed eyes.
Chloe realized just how serious things were. She walked over and softly said, "Dad." Neil looked up, trying to keep it together as he responded. But soon, he hung his head again.
Isaac came over and gently pulled Chloe aside. His eyes were red, too. He had been the one who called her earlier, but in his rush, he hadn't had time to explain everything.
