Connor was no stranger to this place; he'd been here so many times it felt like a second home. The receptionists and even the employees passing by greeted him with respect. Connor just nodded back, as he always did.
Chloe was in the office, sharing a laugh with Edgar. The vibe was easygoing and warm. As Connor came over, Edgar quipped, “A guy who truly loves you, even if he’s running a business empire, will make time to pick you up from work. The ones who don’t care will just say they’re busy today, tired tomorrow, and tell you to get some sleep early the next night.”
Chloe giggled, “What’s going on? Did your boyfriend do something to annoy you?”
To Chloe, Edgar and his boyfriend were still an item. They’d made it public, and everyone in the office was under the same impression. But from what Chloe had seen, Edgar’s boyfriend didn’t seem all that attentive.
Edgar sighed, “He’s just a thoughtless jerk.”
Chloe suggested, “How about we grab some BBQ tonight? Invite your boyfriend, and the four of us can hang out.”
“Nah, I’d rather not have to digest a bunch of lovey-dovey vibes before I even start eating,” Edgar said with a knowing grin and made his exit.
Connor casually draped a coat over Chloe’s shoulders. “Let’s head out. I’ve got us a spot at Seasons Grill.”
Seasons Grill was famous for its charcoal barbecue. Chloe went for the extra spicy. When the food arrived, she was practically drooling. She couldn’t wait to grab a slice of tender beef, dip it in spicy sauce, and savor it.
“Mmm... this is amazing,” Chloe said, fully content.
Connor watched her with a smile. Lately, Chloe’s appetite had picked up, and her tastes had shifted, too. She used to have a sweet tooth, but now she couldn’t get enough spice.
