Connor yanked Lucas by the collar, nearly throwing another punch before he let his clenched fist slowly relax. With a chilly edge to his voice, he asked, "Lucas, do you really think you're still in the running here?"
Lucas, unfazed, shot back defiantly, "It's not for you to decide if I'm in the game or not. That's up to Chloe. Even if she learns about her past, she won't choose you over me. She'll pick me, hands down. Go ahead, spill the beans to her if you don't believe it."
Seeing Lucas so sure of himself made Connor's blood boil. He was itching to knock him out, but he knew Lucas had to have some reason to be so cocky.
After all, it was Lucas who had been by Chloe's side day in and day out these past two years. Chloe had lost all her memories; her entire world, her personality, her values had been molded by Lucas.
Lucas wasn't completely off base. The Chloe of today was a different person. To her, Connor was just some guy she didn't know. Even if he laid everything out for her now, she might not buy it. And even if she did, she might not be able to handle it.
Connor also felt it would be heartless to dump everything on Chloe all at once. This whole mess? It was all thanks to Lucas's selfishness.
Connor let go of Lucas's collar with a sharp motion. "If you're so confident, why did you run? If you're convinced she can't live without you, why not just come clean with her, Lucas? I won't say a word. I'll let her uncover your true self on her own."
