"Silly girl, this is a gift from grandma. I'm old and probably dying. This bracelet will look better on a young girl like you."
The old lady reached out with a smile and did not let her take it off. She would give her the entire Maynard family wealth if it meant Luz and Logan would stay with Henry.
"Grandma, but this bracelet is too expensive. I can't take this." She knew her place.
"Why not? I gave it to you, no takebacks now, or I'll be angry."
The old lady put on a scowl. Luz had no choice but to give up on the matter. She would give it back to Henry when he gets home later so that he can return it to grandma after she left with Logan.
Beside them, Maddison's eyes were almost red with envy. Mrs Maynard's bracelet was no regular bracelet. It was a priceless antique that was rumoured to have been passed down through royalty in the past. She had hoped that the old lady would pass it down to her, but after years of waiting, she ended up giving it to Luz!
"Mother, youngsters nowadays prefer diamonds, not jade."
She was the legitimate daughter-in-law of the Maynard Family. How could the old lady give the bracelet to Luz?
"Who says that young people don't like jade? Luz, tell me, do you think this bracelet is pretty? Do you like it or not?"
Of course, it was beautiful. How could such an expensive thing be ugly? "Grandma, it's very beautiful. I like it very much."
Since her grandmother gave her the bracelet, Maddison's eyes had been fixed on it. It was obvious that she wanted the bracelet, so Luz was equally adamant to not let her have it.
"I knew my granddaughter-in-law was a good girl who knew her stuff. Otherwise, she wouldn't have married into our family."
Reading between the lines of the old lady's words, she was also praising her grandson indirectly.
The kitchen had already finished preparing their dinner, so the old lady pulled Luz towards the dining room and sat down at the table. Maddison suddenly put a hand to her stomach. "Oh, my stomach hurts. Mother, I think I'll skip dinner today."
"Go on then."
After she disappeared upstairs, the old lady snorted. "This woman, does she really think I'm demented because I'm old? I can see through all of her tricks."
Luz smiled faintly. Maddison had been thinking about the Maynard Family's inheritance since eight years ago, and it was evident that she hadn't changed at all.
"Don't mind her. Let's eat."
While the three of them were having dinner downstairs, Maddison closed the door to her bedroom and took out her phone to call someone.
"Hello, Mom." A gentle male voice came through the phone. Maddison's lips immediately curled into a smile.
"Bryce, you haven't called me in a while. I missed you so much. When are you coming back from Canada?"
Madison's eyes were filled with anxiety when she asked her son when he was coming back. On one hand, it was because she really missed her son, on the other hand, she was losing power in the Maynard family since Henry had most of the influence. If Bryce didn't come back soon, they might lose the chance forever.
"Mom, I'm fine in Canada. I won't be going back anytime soon."
"No, you must come back this time."
Maddison raised her voice a little before realizing she was too loud. She lowered her voice and continued, "Bryce, if you don't come back soon, it'll be too late."
