Vivian sat by the bed and held Carson's hand happily. "You're finally awake. Do you know how worried Grace and I were?"
It took Carson quite a while to regain his senses. He felt weak all over and only managed to turn his head to look at Vivian slowly.
"I'm sorry to have worried you," Carson said.
Seeing the man's frail appearance, tears streamed down Vivian's face uncontrollably.
"I'm glad that you're awake. I... I'll call your mother later."
"Vivian..." Carson said in a weak voice.
"What's the matter?" asked Vivian.
Carson frowned slightly. "Don't call them."
Seeing Vivian the moment he woke up was a source of happiness and sorrow.
And he didn't want anyone to disturb them.
Vivian pondered for a moment and said, "Okay. It's already ten o'clock. They are probably sleeping."
Carson pressed his pale lips together, feeling a strong sense of guilt toward her.
Noticing that Carson wasn't saying much, Vivian asked with concern, "Are you feeling unwell and don't feel like talking?"
Carson quickly said, "No, I'm not feeling unwell. I'm very happy to see you."
After a pause, he added, "Vivian, you should go home. I'm fine now. You don't need to stay here with me."
Vivian frowned. She couldn't believe the first thing he did after walking up was to ask her to leave.
"Carson, are you chasing me away?" Vivian asked.
Carson's heart ached. He quickly said, "No, why would I chase you away? You've been taking care of me in the past few days, right?"
Vivian said, "Your mother was here during the day."
Carson felt even more guilty. He could not give Vivian anything, but she cared for him like family.
Vivian said, "When you had your first relapse five years ago, I felt that I would be devastated if I lost you. We've remained friends for the past five years, but both you and I know deep down that our feelings are more than friends. Carson, you like me too. Let's be together."
Instead of posing it as a question, Vivian confidently asserted that he liked her.
Carson looked at her tear-streak face, feeling joy and pain at the same time.
He thought, 'I don't even know if I can live until tomorrow. I can't ruin her life.'
Carson wanted to lift his hand to wipe away Vivian's tears, but he had no strength.
You see. You don't even have the strength to wipe her tears. So, how are you going to give her happiness?'
Carson closed his eyes in dismay.
Seeing that the man was silent for a long while, Vivian asked in puzzlement, "Carson, why aren't you saying anything?"
Carson replied, "Vivian, Sorry. I... don't like you. You've misunderstood."
