The principal immediately became wary, saying, "You don't even have your ID. How can you prove your identity?"
Grace explained hurriedly, "It's a long story. When I came, I was attacked and fell into the sea. A local fisherman saved me, so now I don't have my phone and ID with me."
The principal looked at her suspiciously, thinking, 'Although she doesn't look like a bad person, she still can't be readily trusted.'
"Since you can't prove your identity, go back and get your ID before coming here again," the principal said.
Grace was extremely anxious. She said, "Ma'am, it's been five years since I last saw my daughter. I just want to know her whereabouts now. Can you please give me the contact information of her adoptive parents?"
The principal still refused to believe Grace. She shook her head firmly and said, "No. If you can't provide evidence, we won't tell you the child's contact information. Besides, the child has already transferred to another school. She won't attend school here anymore."
Grace asked in surprise, "She has transferred to another school? Where did she transfer to?"
"Capern City," the principal said.
Grace frowned, thinking, 'Could it be that they have all moved to Capern City and won't be coming back? If that's the case, it will be even harder to find out where they are.'
After some thought, she suddenly remembered the photo she had with her.
She hurriedly took off the pendant hanging around her neck and opened it. The pendant was waterproof. The photo inside was still clearly visible.
"Ma'am, take a look," she said. "This is a photo of my daughter when she was a baby. This is a photo taken when she was a hundred days old."
The principal noticed that Grace had been crying all along and her voice was trembling. It was indeed touching.
She glanced at the child's photo, thinking, 'Her facial features and expression do bear some resemblance to Joy's.'
Grace could tell that the principal was hesitating. She pleaded, "Ma'am, please give us some clues."
In the end, the principal gave her the contact information of the child's adoptive parents.
It was a landline number.
Grace frowned, thinking, 'There's no one in their house anymore. Will someone pick up if I call this number?'
She borrowed a phone from a teacher and tried making a call, but as she had expected, no one picked up.
"Brian, Austin is still alive," she said. "You have to get better too. You must get better. Understand?"
But Brian was patting her back like he was comforting a child.
The weather in Seefer City was hot and humid, which was not favorable for Brian's illness. He had only been out for half a day, and his head started to ache again.
Grace had no choice but to bring him back to the hospital to take his medication and rest.
After he fell asleep, she went to the nurse's station and borrowed a phone to call Carson.
The phone rang for quite a while before it was picked up.
"Hello? Hi." It was a female voice at the other end of the line.
"Vivian?" Grace said. "Is that you?"
Vivian paused for a moment before saying, "Grace?"
