Chapter 1576
Emily blurted out immediately, "No, Kya isn't his kid."
"Then whose kid is she?"
With a stone-cold face, Emily answered, "I was raped when studying abroad in Oakdale City, and Kya was born there."
Shawn looked at Emily in shock. He suddenly squatted down, bursting into tears, "Emily, I'm so sorry, I really am. You've had to bear so much suffering!"
Listening to Shawn's crying, Emily felt a pang of pain in her heart and turned to look out the window.
As a kid, she saw her dad as a mountain, tall and mighty. She admired him, loved him, and thought he would always protect her.
But over time, that mountain had long since collapsed, no longer resembling its former self.
Returning home today, she barely recognized him. He had aged considerably. He looked poor and miserable, and he reminded her of the old clock abandoned in the yard when she was a kid, on the verge of decay.
But should she feel pity for him?
If he hadn't gambled, they wouldn't be in so much debt, he wouldn't have had to sell the old house, and she would've had a home.
They could've been a happy family. Despite the huge gap between her and Charlie, she could've pursued him with courage and determination.
But now, she didn't have the courage to approach Charlie anymore.
With no support behind her, only endless pressure, how could she possibly date him?
She had always known that her dad would show up sooner or later.
He was like a ticking time bomb, ready to explode and ruin everything she had.
And now, he had shown up.
For some reason, Emily felt relieved despite her sadness.
Emily's heart skipped a beat. She took a deep breath, calmed down, and replied: [Estelle's staying here tonight, it's best if you don't come.]
Charlie: [Isn't Jonathan with her?]
Emily: [Maybe.]
[Then you should rest early.]
[Alright.]
After she read the message, Emily's phone slipped from her hand and landed on the bed. It made her realize that her relationship with Charlie had indeed come to an end.
When she left the room, Ms. Simmons was already gone, and Shawn was cooking in the kitchen. He was chopping tomatoes on the cutting board. Wiping his hands, he gave Kya a slice of tomato, and with a smile, he told her, "Tomatoes are very sweet. They are even sweeter than apples."
Emily's heart ached, and she felt like crying. When she was a kid, her family was poor and couldn't afford apples. Every time her father cooked, he would give her a slice of tomato and tell her that tomatoes were sweeter than apples.
