His mood was as restless as a storm, not finding a moment of peace. The memory of Sophia dodging Robin's gaze earlier that day weighed on his heart like a boulder, causing an invisible ache.
He was willing to give her time to fall for him, yet he feared that before she could, she might turn back to Robin.
Given her childlike innocence and her past affection for Robin, could she truly let him go?
His love for her, as deep as it had been, had already caused him pain. This time, she had given him hope. If she were to turn away again, he wasn't sure he could bear it.
Jason stared into the abyss of the night, his unease as boundless as the darkness itself.
Sophia, too, had a restless night. Perhaps she had gone to bed too early, for after her bath, she lay awake, tossing and turning.
She tried forcing herself not to think of Jason, turned off the lights, and buried her head under the covers, counting sheep in an attempt to find sleep.
But after only a few sheep, Jason's face would invade her thoughts, sometimes tender and holding her close, other times stern and reprimanding.
Sophia caught herself drifting off topic and would drag her focus back to counting sheep.
This cycle repeated several times, leaving her mind buzzing and sleep nowhere in sight.
The moon hung large in the sky, its bright light making her heart flutter with unease.
Eventually, she fell asleep, though she couldn't recall exactly when.
Close to dawn, she dreamt she was in Jason's study, seated on her usual couch, with him kissing her passionately.
She wanted to push him away but found herself too weak, her head spinning as if she were ascending in a hot air balloon, her senses heightened with tension and excitement.
Suddenly, Evelyn appeared at the door, accusing, "Jason, Sophia is out dating Robin again. I saw everything!"
Jason stopped, slowly stood up, and looked at her with a cold, indifferent gaze. "Sophia, how could you do this to me?"
Sophia, panicked, shook her head. "Jason, it's not what Evelyn says!"
