Chapter 513 She was Pregnant
The more Evelyn said this, the sadder she felt. She was not sure if she would be fine now. She only knew that things had begun to develop in the direction she did not want, and the test papers in her pocket would become the key to everything.
“Evelyn, are you really okay? If there’s anything I can do, please don’t hesitate to tell me.” Grace held her cold hand. As a good friend, she could sense that something was off with Evelyn.
After some thought, Evelyn came up with something she wanted to ask for Grace’s help with. “Grace, we’ve known each other for so long, and I’ve always tried not to bother others, but today I really need to ask for your help…”
Without waiting for her to finish, Grace waved her hand and said, “No need for formalities between us. Just tell me straight.”
With a serious expression, Evelyn took a deep breath and slowly exhaled. Her tone was a little heavy as she said, “I need you to take care of my parents for me. They’re getting older, and my father… he values reputation. Since this incident happened, I haven’t contacted my family. The only thing I did was ask the police station to deliver a message to them. If you have time, please visit them more often and don’t let them worry about me. And in the future… please take care of them.”
Grace listened attentively. At first, she didn’t think much of it, but as she continued listening, she felt something was amiss.
After careful consideration, a chill ran down her spine, and she furrowed her brows. “Evelyn, what do you mean by saying these things? Why do I feel like you’re not coming back…?”
Evelyn’s hands, placed under the table, suddenly clenched tightly, but her face remained calm. She even forced a smile and said, “Why would you think that? You’re overthinking it. It’s probably because I haven’t contacted my family for a long time and feel guilty about it.”
Her tone was not tense as she spoke, and Grace took a few more glances at her. Although she didn’t fully believe her in her heart, she stopped doubting because she knew Huston was helping her.
“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of them. I’m like their second daughter, and whenever I have time, I’ll go and comfort them.”
She was extremely grateful. “Thank you so much, Grace.”
They talked for a while longer. It was getting late, and there were restrictions on visitation. It wasn’t appropriate for her to be there in the first place, and even if they made an exception, she shouldn’t stay for too long.
Before leaving, Grace looked back repeatedly, wanting to take another look at Evelyn. Evelyn was afraid she couldn’t hold back her tears, so she forced herself not to turn around until she didn’t hear a single sound from behind and until the door behind her closed again.
She knew someone was watching her on the surveillance
cameras, so she pretended to read a book as usual. After about ten minutes or so, she got up and walked towards the restroom inside the house.
Only the restroom was devoid of surveillance cameras in the room, as it was considered a private space.
Evelyn walked steadily, but when she turned around and closed the door, she breathed a sigh of relief. Her back was against the wall in the narrow space, and her palms were covered with a layer of cold sweat.
Her slender fingers trembled as she took the pregnancy test paper from her pocket. She took off her pants and sat on the toilet bowl, feeling as if there were thousands of ants crawling in her heart. They bit her flesh little by little. Itchy and sore, they gradually flowed to her limbs and bones through her blood.
Feeling worried, afraid, anxious, and uneasy.
No negative emotions could adequately describe her current state of mind. Waiting was long and excruciating. In just a few minutes, she felt as though she had lived through half a century.
She counted the time in her mind. She took the test paper, but her eyes were fixed on the ceiling of the restroom.
She didn’t dare look at it, and her hand holding the test paper trembled like a sieve.
