Lucas thought for a moment and shook his head. "No, I want to be with Mom."
Although he said that he didn't want to, in fact, she could see the disappointment in his eyes. It was as if she was forcing the child to make a choice.
This was not something that he should have considered at his age, but now he had to consider it.
"Here comes the chicken noodle soup." Sadie placed the soup in front of her. The color was bright and it smelt pleasant. Just looking at it made Evelyn feel hungry.
She scooped up a spoonful and blew on it before handing it to Lucas. "Would you like to try it?"
"I’ve had it at noon. Mom, you can eat!" Lucas said as he got down from her body and sat aside obediently, not disturbing her from eating.
As she drank the soup, she was thinking what the child had just said. She didn't even know when Huston had come downstairs.
He didn't eat anything at noon, so Sadie served him another bowl. The man picked up the spoon and it made a crisp sound when it hit the edge of the bowl. Only then did she come to her senses.
Meeting her long and narrow eyes, Huston said softly, "What are you thinking about? Why are you so absorbed in your thoughts?"
She lowered her head again, her face almost buried in the bowl. "Nothing."
"How does it taste?"
"Very good."
"Then eat more, in case you get hungry later. There's nothing else to eat at home."
When Lucas heard this, he immediately complained to Evelyn, "That's right, Mom. You have to eat more. Mr. Lloyd doesn't have any snacks here. He won't allow me to eat them!"
Evelyn had only been asking Lucas to eat fewer snacks, but Huston just forbade him from eating them. However, the children all liked snacks, and they would always think about it.
Huston's actions were completely due to the psychological trauma from last time's accumulation of food. He was especially afraid that the child would fall ill again due to other issues. Furthermore, the snacks were not nutritious, so he'd better not eat them if possible.
