And so it went on for several days, and Nico and his companions had been behaving as if everything was normal without any problems.
Until this day.
"Ouch!"
While Nico was working, he suddenly collapsed to the ground, with a dense rash appearing on his face.
At first, the supervisors thought he might be pretending to slack off, but when they approached, they realized something was wrong.
Before they could say anything, someone behind them exclaimed, "Ah! Could it be smallpox?"
"What nonsense are you talking about? Where would smallpox come from?" The overseer glared fiercely at them, urging them to leave.
But before the workers could react, one after another started falling, and everyone exhibited similar symptoms, with varying degrees of rashes on their faces.
Now, the supervisors were starting to panic, and even the guards at the cave entrance were alarmed.
"Could it really be smallpox?" one of the supervisors asked nervously.
"What nonsense are you talking about?"
The stubble-bearded man, whom Charlotte and others had first encountered on the island, stepped forward and rebuked, "How could smallpox even exist today? You all better shut up!"
"But!" Despite the stubble-bearded man's fierce appearance, the others did not believe him. Some even pointed at the red rashes on the faces of the fallen workers and questioned, "How do you explain the symptoms on their faces? It looks exactly like smallpox! This forsaken little island, who knows if prehistoric viruses are lurking?"
The stubble-bearded man glared at him fiercely, ready to speak, but surprisingly, many people agreed with the skeptics, supporting their argument.
