When Beck spoke up, the cops handed the phone over to Blake without hesitation. Blake knew Beck was just itching to see her squirm, but she took the phone anyway and dialed her dad's number. She held onto a tiny hope that he'd find a sliver of fatherly love to bail them out.
The call connected after just one ring.
“Dad…” Blake's voice cracked.
“Why is it you!” Her dad's voice was ice-cold and laced with anger. “Blake, I must be cursed to have a daughter like you. You're on the brink of destroying the overseas company I built. Daughters are nothing but trouble, damn it! You'd be better off rotting in jail!”
With that, he slammed the phone down.
Blake hung her head, tears finally streaming down her face. Her dad was even more ruthless than she'd feared. To him, she and Lydia were just burdens, unwanted and unloved.
Noticing her tears, Beck showed no compassion, twisting the knife further. “Blake, you plagiarized Ms. Flora's paper. We'll drag this lawsuit out as long as we can. If you end up having to pay, it’ll be at least ten million. Can't cough up that kind of cash? Then it's off to jail for you.”
Blake knew her dad wouldn’t come to her rescue. Without ten million on hand, prison was her only option.
“Better get comfy; this is just the beginning,” Beck sneered, his tone as cold as ice. No way the Haines family was letting the Neville sisters off the hook that easily. Their troubles were just getting started.
Lydia and Blake clung to each other, sobbing, but no one showed them any sympathy. Kaylee, Howell, and Beck all wore indifferent expressions.
Once they left the station, Howell drove Kaylee back to school. As soon as they were gone, Beck whipped out his phone and eagerly called Connor. “Boss, I’ve cracked another of Ms. Flora’s aliases!”
“She’s Rose!”
Beck was over the moon! But Connor, on the other end, just gave a nonchalant “Oh” before hanging up.
Still buzzing with excitement and with so much left unsaid, Beck immediately called Moss. As soon as Moss picked up, Beck shouted, “Moss! You owe me a month of washing my stinky socks! I won the bet!”
“I should’ve asked for more. Since you’re doing laundry anyway, why not tackle my underwear too?”
