Rachel asked, "Serena, help me out, will you? I'll make sure to put in a few good words for you with your dad."
Serena was blocked from leaving. Rachel nagged at her until she finally gave in and helped her back to the room.
That night, Howard's furious pounding on the door jolted her awake.
As soon as she opened it, Howard's palm came swinging toward her. She snapped awake and dodged in time. "Dad, what's got you so worked up in the middle of the night?"
"I told you to take good care of Rachel! And what did you do? You yanked her during the day and made her strain her back. Now she is in so much pain she needs to go to the hospital! If anything happens to my son, I'll beat you to death!"
Howard was seething. Outside, Rachel's pitiful cries echoed through the hall, mixed with Sarah's shrill voice yelling for a car.
It was a whole night of chaos.
Serena could barely keep her eyes open by morning.
In the end, the doctor finally spoke up with a casual tone.
"She got pregnant too soon after the last miscarriage. Her body is weak. Tell her to take it easy."
Rachel leaned into Howard's arms, nodding shyly.
"I won't be running around anymore," she said sweetly.
Sarah pointed straight at Serena.
"You're the one who blocked Mom in the hallway. If not for you, Mom would've made it back to her room earlier and wouldn't have strained her back or upset the baby!"
Serena had been nodding off nearby. When she heard Sarah's remark, she coldly glanced at Sarah.
"If walking a few extra steps is all it takes to lose the baby, maybe she should go ahead and book a hospital suite for the next ten months. I'm sure the cost of that is nothing compared to the Jansen family's precious bloodline."
"That's not a bad idea." Howard turned serious at the mention of 'bloodline'.
Rachel panicked. She couldn't imagine staying in the hospital for 10 months. She'd fall into depression before the baby was even born!
"No need to go that far. I'll just be more careful on my own."
