"Yep," Lillian chimed in with a voice that was a bit too high-pitched. "She showed up and didn't even bother to say hello to you first. Instead, she just wandered off to chat with others. What does that say? She's obviously not giving you the respect you deserve."
Emily was seeing red. "Allison really has no respect for her elders, no manners whatsoever. And to think your mother always praised her as a well-mannered and cultured girl."
Lillian's lips curled into a sly smile as she spoke softly, "Grandma, don't let her get to you. Your health is what truly matters."
Emily gently patted Lillian's hand. "Lillian, you are my best granddaughter."
Lillian's smile widened. "Grandma, how about I stay with you forever?"
Emily chuckled, giving her a warm look. "Oh, you silly girl. You’ll get married one day. As much as I'd love for you to stay with me, you have your own life to lead."
‘I'll marry Joshua, and then I can stay with you forever,’ Lillian thought but kept it to herself.
She just smiled sweetly and teased, "For you, Grandma, I could stay single forever."
That comment made Emily's heart swell with joy, and she laughed out loud. Just then, Joshua and Allison noticed Emily and wrapped up their conversation to head over.
"They're on their way," Lillian pointed out.
Emily let out a dismissive sniff. "About time."
Allison, with her arm linked through Joshua's, stopped in front of Emily and greeted her politely, "Mrs. Fisher." She remembered how Emily had insisted she not call her "Grandma" at their last encounter. But Emily’s face showed no satisfaction, her brows knitting together.
"Why are you so formal? Still holding onto that family dinner mishap? I've already apologized to Joshua. Why are you still holding a grudge?"
