Since finding out about Allison's real identity, Pearl had been venting about Kate to her girlfriends more times than she could count. But she'd never say a word of it to Kate's face. The illusion of their friendship had to be kept up.

Pearl gave Kate's shoulder a reassuring pat, "Come on, Kate, don't be so hard on yourself. Honestly, Allison's the real joke here. Remember when you first got back? We all saw how Shawn couldn't get enough of you. Allison's been played for a fool so many times, she's the one who's a joke!"

Kate gave a small smile, her mood lifting a bit, "You're right. Allison is the joke."

Pearl took a sip from her margarita, grinning, "Hey, Kate, I heard Allison's got a new boyfriend now. Does that mean you and Shawn are getting back on track?"

In the dim bar light, Kate's gloomy expression was hidden in the shadows. She forced a smile, but there was a cold glint in her eyes.

Pearl was definitely asking that on purpose. Everyone knew about Shawn's dramatic antics over Allison, and there was no way Pearl hadn't heard. Her questions were clearly meant to poke fun.

Kate's face twisted with anger, but she quickly composed herself, replying steadily, "Not really. Shawn's company just started running again, and he's been swamped with work, no time for any romance."

"Really?" Pearl laughed lightly, "Oh yeah, I heard Shawn was in the hospital recently. Must've been from working too hard. I was too busy to swing by Oak Lake, but Colt mentioned it was pretty serious, hospitalized for days. What's up with that?"
