Allison was hauled up the abandoned building by Chris's crew. Heights weren’t her thing, and the higher they got, the more her legs felt like jelly. This half-finished concrete and steel giant had no railings on the stairs, and up top, there wasn’t a safety feature in sight. Step by shaky step, she climbed with Chris’s guys.
In her mind, she ticked off the floors. They came to a stop on the twenty-sixth. The guys holding her paused too.
“What time is it?” Chris asked, sounding almost bored.
“Chris, it’s seven-forty,” answered the man who had snatched her the night before. She hadn’t caught his name.
When he got the time, Chris raised an eyebrow, turning to Allison. “You really think... Joshua’s gonna come solo to rescue you?”
Allison pressed her lips together, eyes dropping to the floor.
“Scared?” Chris chuckled. “Relax, if you’re that into him, I could set you two up as doomed lovebirds.”
Allison kept her head down, silent.
