Shawn caught the news about the accident and then stumbled upon some bystander videos online. When he saw Allison fighting off an attacker, his heart nearly stopped. Before he could even catch his breath, another clip showed Allison being loaded into an ambulance, and his worry hit the roof.
He grabbed his assistant’s phone, dialing Allison's number over and over, but there was no answer. Anxiety clawed at him, and he ditched work, racing to the hospital without a second thought. He didn’t have a clue which hospital she might be in, so he dashed around to the three closest ones, asking everyone he could until he finally spotted some familiar faces outside the emergency room of the last hospital.
Breathless and desperate, Shawn rushed up and clutched Joshua’s arm. “Joshua, how’s Allie?” he blurted out. He hadn’t noticed the sticky, warm sensation until he looked down to see his hand smeared with blood, and shock coursed through him.
Joshua’s eyes were icy as he yanked his arm free, saying tersely, “She’s still in surgery.”
“What happened?” Shawn pressed on, “I read online that someone got shot. How did the attacker have a gun? Was it Chris? Is he seeking revenge?” Joshua’s face hardened, and he barked, “Shut up, you’re making a scene.”
Shawn’s anger flared up. “Joshua, if you can’t keep Allie safe, why do you keep dragging her into this mess? If it wasn’t for you, she wouldn’t be in danger over and over!”
His voice rose, earning a scolding from a nurse passing by. “This is a hospital, keep your voice down!”
Shawn lowered his tone but didn’t back down, glaring at Joshua with frustration. “Joshua, haven’t you caused enough trouble for Allie? Why are you still pulling her into this? Are you really that helpless, unable to protect the woman you love? What good are you? You said I wasn’t good enough for Allie, that I didn’t deserve to love her, but what about you? What right do you have?”
Joshua’s jaw clenched as he absorbed Shawn’s accusations, his hands clenching into fists, but he stayed silent.
