Chapter 69
Chapter 69
Allison quickly got the full story behind the knife attack. Drew, the guy with the blade, was a private company owner who got into a legal mess with another firm. Brody took on Drew and won the case. Drew was slapped with a huge penalty for breaching the contract, and things went downhill from there as the court froze his company’s accounts.
Brody didn’t stop there. He dug up dirt on Drew mixing his business and personal finances and pulling out capital. This led to the court seizing Drew’s properties and anything of value he owned. To top it all off, Drew’s wife cheated on him and ran off with a chunk of their money. With everything falling apart, Drew was at his wits‘ end. He blamed it all on Summit & Vale Solicitors and went after them with a knife in a fit of revenge. Thankfully, Brody survived the attack.
After that scare, the law firm made sure to beef up their security, turning a room into a security hub and posting two burly guards there. Joshua had them looking out for Allison, and she knew it.
Meanwhile, Shawn was holed up in the hospital for a couple of weeks. He kept trying to call Allison using his assistant’s phone, but she never picked up or came by. Every time the door creaked open, he hoped it was her, only to be let down each time. He couldn’t shake the painful image of Allison with another guy. It gnawed at him every day.
Finally, after what felt like forever, Shawn was discharged. If Allison wasn’t coming to him, he’d go to her. He was itching to see her.
On the day he left the hospital, Shawn led the way with his assistant and Kate by his side.
“Are things set with the Hartley Group?” Shawn asked as they headed to the parking lot. During his stay, the old–timers at Reynolds Group had been bugging him about lining up investments.
His assistant answered, “Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Hartley is going to a gala next Friday at 8 p.m. I snagged an invite.” Shawn got into the car, with his assistant taking the front seat. “What kind of event is it?” Shawn inquired.
“It’s a banquet Mr. Hartley’s throwing for his cousin,” the assistant explained. “She just returned to Oak Lake. It’s a welcome back party and her grand intro to the social scene.”
In the backseat, Kate cozied up to Shawn, linking her arm with his. But Shawn subtly pulled away, leaving her surprised. He hadn’t been like this before. Since she got back, they’d been inseparable. Now, he seemed distant. Was he still hung up on Allison?
“Shawn, why are you…” Kate started, but Shawn cut her off. “How old is Zack’s cousin?”
“She’s in her early twenties, a young lady,” the assistant replied.
“Got any intel on her?” Shawn asked.
