When I returned to the bedroom, Amber had just finished her bath Hearing the bathroom door open, I put on my slippers and turned to see Amber in a white, snowy bathrobe, her dark hair wet and loose, her slender neck and collarbones exposed.
Her face was flushed from the steam, her eyelashes beaded with water, and a misty aura surrounded her. The sight of my mate stirred something deep within me.
My wolf Leo stirred restlessly beneath my skin. The mate bond hummed between us.
She looked ethereal in the soft lighting, like a vision that might disappear if I moved too quickly. Her amber eyes met mine through the mirror, and I saw the exhaustion there despite her brave facade.
“You’re back,” she said softly, adjusting the belt of her robe. “I was starting to wonder if you’d gone out again.”
(Amber’s POV)
I noticed Dominic’s deep, troubled look immediately. His usually composed features were marred by something that seemed to weigh heavily on his mind.
“Did you go out?” I asked, studying his expression through the mirror. “You look like you’ve been thinking about something serious.”
Dominic moved to the small kitchenette area and returned with a glass of warm moonlight herb tea. The fragrant steam rose between us as he handed it to me.
“I prepared this for you,” he said gently. “It will help with sleep and soothe you after today’s stress.”
I accepted the cup gratefully, letting the warmth seep through my fingers. But my attention remained fixed on his furrowed brow.
He moved behind me and picked up the hairdryer, his movements careful and deliberate. As he began drying my hair with gentle strokes, I watched his reflection in the mirror.
His jaw was tense, his blue eyes distant. Whatever was troubling him ran deep.
The warm air from the dryer felt soothing against my scalp, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something important was weighing on his mind. His touch was as tender as always, but his expression remained preoccupied.
I observed his troubled features through the mirror, sensing he was struggling with something he wasn’t ready to voice.
“Dominic,” I called out, but he didn’t hear me over the hairdryer’s noise.
I tugged at his shirt, and he immediately turned off the dryer, his attention snapping to me with concern.
“Are you uncomfortable?” he asked, his voice filled with immediate worry.
I shook my head and turned to face him, gathering my courage. The conversation with Oliver tonight had stirred up memories I’d tried to bury, and I needed Dominic to understand the truth.
“I wasn’t violated by those rogue wolves,” I said, the words coming out with difficulty but complete sincerity. “That wasn’t faked.”
His expression grew very still, his blue eyes searching my face.
“That medical proof wasn’t fake,” I continued, my voice trembling slightly. “I didn’t have any reconstructive procedures. Do you believe me?”
I believed this was what troubled him. The memories came flooding back – how my family and Ethan had doubted me after the kidnapping, despite my desperate attempts to prove my innocence

Victoria’s malicious suggestion to go to Crescent Moon Hospital for examination still burned in my memory. The way Ethan had grown cold afterward, as if the very act of needing proof had somehow tainted me.
I had sought that medical certificate to prove my purity, only for the rumors to resurface years later. People whispered that modern medicine could fake anything, that wealthy families could buy any documentation they needed.
“After I came back, everyone doubted me,” I whispered, the pain of those memories cutting deep. “Even with the medical evidence, they said it could be fabricated. That my family had paid for false documentation.”
My hands clenched into fists as I remembered Ethan’s skeptical looks, the way he’d pulled away from me in the months that followed.
After a moment of silence that felt like an eternity, Dominic lifted me onto the marble washbasin counter, his strong hands steady on my waist.
He positioned himself between my knees, his hands framing my face as he looked directly into my amber eyes.
“I believe you, Amber,” he declared, his voice firm and unwavering. “Whatever you say, I believe you.”
The simplicity of his statement should have comforted me, but something in his tone made me suspicious. I studied his face, searching for any hint of deception.
“You’re lying,” I accused, still upset. “You’re just saying what you think I want to hear.”
Before I could say another word, he kissed me passionately, his lips claiming mine with an intensity that made my head spin. The mate bond ignited between us, sending sparks of electricity through every nerve ending.
His hands tangled in my damp hair as he deepened the kiss, and I felt my resistance melting away. The familiar heat began building between us, my wolf Cora purring with contentment.
Just as things began to intensify, I pressed my hands against his chest, breaking the kiss.
“Stop,” I said breathlessly. “You’re trying to distract me. I want you to answer my question about what’s really troubling you.”
Dominic pulled back slightly, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. The troubled expression I’d seen earlier was replaced by something warmer, almost amused.
“I was thinking,” he said slowly, his voice dropping to that deep rumble that always made my pulse quicken, “whether we should have a son or a daughter first.”
I blinked at him, completely taken aback. “What?”
“It’s quite a dilemma,” he continued, his hands still resting on my waist. “I want a son to protect you and carry on the Blackwood Alpha lineage. But I also want a daughter who looks just like you,”
Heat flooded my cheeks as the implications of his words sank in. “That’s what you’ve been brooding about? Our future children?
”
“It’s a serious consideration,” he said, his smile becoming more pronounced. “The timing, the order, the logistics of it all.”
I couldn’t help but tease him, my earlier upset forgotten in the face of this unexpected revelation. “Are you sure you have the ability to make such specific requests? I mean, you’re Alpha and all but I don’t think that extends to controlling genetics.”
His eyes darkened at my challenge, and I realized I’d struck a nerve. Male wolves, no n. told they “couldn’t” perform.
“Is that a challenge?” he growled, his hands tightening on my waist.
how powerful, never liked being
The night that followed involved quite a bit of intimate persuasion on his part, and by morning, I had learned that questioning an Alpha’s capabilities was a dangerous game indeed.
The next day, I woke up at noon in the countryside village, my body deliciously sore from Dominic’s thorough demonstration of his “abilities.”

Sunlight streamed through the small window of our room at the village inn, casting everything in a golden glow. My morning was free, with only a few interviews with local teachers that Liam would handle.
