Chapter 450
Agnes just couldn’t bear to stay with him.
She whispered, “Can you find your own way home? You’ve had a few drinks, don’t drive yourself. Get a designated driver or call your secretary. I need to go see my dad.”
With that, Agnes turned and walked away.
Jared had planned to spend the night with Agnes, looking after Preston.
But as he watched Agnes walk away, he’d never felt so lost.
Earlier in the evening, Mamie had casually mentioned that Agnes might be pregnant.
To him, it was like seeing an oasis in the middle of a desert. A glimmer of hope.
If Agnes was pregnant, maybe things would change. Maybe she wouldn’t be so determined to leave him, to abandon him.
Even if it was for the sake of the baby, maybe she’d stay.
He was willing to do anything, even spend his whole life making up for the pain he caused her, just to have her stay.
But in the end, it was all just wishful thinking.
Nobody could understand the depth of his disappointment, which was more like despair.
Jared admitted to himself, he was head over heels in love with her.
He couldn’t imagine a life without her. Why was she becoming more and more determined to leave? What was he supposed to do?
Agnes went to Preston’s hospital room.
He was still lying there, breathing evenly.
The doctors said the chances of him regaining consciousness were slim.
But as long as his vital signs were stable, Agnes felt comforted.
The room was very quiet.
Agnes sat by the bed, lost in thought. She wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words.
She pulled out her phone and finally sent a text to Kerri, just one short sentence, “Thank you.”
Yes, Kerri had switched the blood samples. The blood sample tested was actually Kerri’s.
She was currently doing an internship at Hope Hospital. She was originally in cardiology, but had recently been transferred to the lab after crossing the wrong person. And she was working late every day.
It was this coincidence that gave Kerri the opportunity to switch the samples.
Agnes wasn’t even sure if she was pregnant.
Her life had been so chaotic recently.
Thinking back, she realized she hadn’t had her period in two or three months.
But with everything going on with her dad, she hadn’t been paying attention to her own body and just thought her period was off.
But when Mamie brought up the topic, Agnes had to start considering…
She hadn’t had her period, her appetite had been off, and she was frequently vomiting. She was always tired, and her memory was getting worse. All these symptoms were consistent with pregnancy.
