Jared placed the chocolate cake in front of Agnes. "You haven't eaten anything tonight, have you? Eat some before work."
Agnes stared at the chocolate cake in surprise. "Isn't this usually sold out? The shop should be closed by now. How did you manage to get it?"
Jared casually perched on the edge of Agnes' desk, a slight smirk on his face. "I have my ways."
Although he said it lightly, Agnes knew it couldn't have been that simple. Jared must have gone through some trouble to get the cake, hence why he was an hour late. The bitterness in her heart seemed to fade a little.
Agnes tasted a piece of the chocolate cake. The rich, savory flavor of chocolate spread across her palate. "Delicious," she said.
Jared started, "You were at the parking lot earlier, weren't you?"
Agnes' breath paused, and then she quickly said, "No."
Jared looked at Agnes and said, "When you lie, you can't look me in the eyes."
Agnes shot back, "I'm not lying, and I have no problem looking into your eyes."
Agnes locked eyes with Jared, like a child challenging an adult. If she lacked even this much courage, then she wouldn't last long.
Agnes felt uncomfortable under his gaze, her suppressed anger flaring up again. She saw everything on the spot, and Jared didn't even bother to explain.
Annoyed, Agnes huffed and got back to work. The cake was now a painful reminder of her jealousy and she pushed it aside.
Seeing her reaction, Jared decided to stop teasing her. "Alright, I'm sorry. I promise I won't hug any other woman from now on. Could you forgive me this once? You know it was just a courteous hug, nothing more."
Agnes knew. She was there at the time. It was Sharon who'd initiated the hug. Agnes wasn't one to be petty. But she couldn't help feeling jealous. Was it because Jared was unaware of Sharon's feelings for him, or was he playing dumb?
