Yet somehow, it felt like Thalia had become the one standing in the way of Adam's happiness.
A trace of sorrow flickered in her eyes. She looked at Adam standing before her, and as if making some firm decision, said directly, "I'm married. I also have another son."
"So, please, give up," she thought.
Once they wrapped up things in this world, she would leave and never appear in his life again.
She thought that by saying this, Adam, proud as he was, would understand and turn away with dignity.
What she didn't expect was that his expression didn't shift in the slightest.
He simply continued looking at her and stated frankly, "I had someone look into you. In all the investigation files, there's no mention of a daughter. No record of any marriage, either."
He didn't seem the least bit guilty about investigating her behind her back. He even appeared ready to pursue the matter to the very end.
Before she could respond, he persisted with another question. "Can I know why you've been watching me all these years?"
Not for a few instances, but consistently, for more than a decade. Even the scope of her old job surrounded his life.
Adam couldn't think of a single reason why a married woman would persistently, even after being driven away by security multiple times, linger around him day after day for years.
Unless she was some sort of corporate spy or…
"It's because you look a lot like my dad!" Shannon cut in out of nowhere, catching both adults completely off guard.
Thalia, still reeling and dazed, nonetheless snapped to attention in sync with her daughter's impromptu line. Years of mother-daughter intuition kicked in. She jumped in without missing a beat.
"Yes! It was because you looked… just like my late husband."
Once that line was out, the rest came easily.
She slipped seamlessly into her role, spinning a tale so blurred between truth and fabrication it felt heartbreakingly real.
"My late husband and I had only been married for a few years before we were torn apart by an accident. That same year, I got separated from my newborn daughter.
