Chapter 268
When the caregiver saw Lily, she i red? Have you been crying?”
immediately set down the towel in her hand. “Ms. Joyner, you’re here. We’ve all had lunch, have you eaten–oh, why are your eyes
“No, it’s just the cold weather. My eyes are sensitive.” Lily forced a stiff smile. “You can take a break. I’ll look after him this aftemoon.”
“okay.” The caregiver noticed her raspy voice. She glanced at Lily again and said before she left, “Ms. Joyner, cheer up. Hayden needs you. I talk to him every day. but he doesn’t react. However, whenever I mention you, he’ll look at me.
“1 understand. Thank you.” Lily walked over to the chair by the bed and sat down. She picked up a warm towel to wipe Hayden’s face.
The caregiver left, and only Lily and Hayden remained in the room.
Lily wasn’t her usual talkative self, and she finished wiping Hayden’s face in silence. After setting down the towel, she held Hayden’s hand, pressed it against her forehead, and fell silent.
Lying on the bed, Hayden suddenly turned his head slightly to look at her. He saw her trembling shoulders and felt the warmth of her tears on his fingertips.
Lily quickly collected herself, keeping her head down, forehead pressed against his hand. They stayed like this for a long time.
After a while, Lily spoke hoarsely, “It’s not that I don’t want to pay for your medical bills, but it just feels so unfair_”
If the Joyner family couldn’t come up with the money, the Fultons were the only way to save Hayden. Even if it meant losing all her dignity, she would have to beg Xavier for help.
The Joyner family had never given her warmth. All they wanted was to exploit her.
“Hayden, get better soon.” Lily felt if Hayden recovered and stood up for her in front of Bobby and Hazel, they might treat her better.
Yet, it no longer mattered whether Hayden defended her or not. Lily was cutting ties with them. But Hayden was still her brother and the only person who made her feel like family.
Suddenly, Lily felt a weight on her head. She looked up and saw Hayden’s other hand resting on her head, gently patting it. Her long hair cascaded down, and he gently tucked it behind her ear.
“Lily.” Hayden’s voice was very soft. That one single word exhausted his energy.
Lily quickly wiped away her tears, held his hand against her cheek, and pretended to be okay. “Did I disturb you? Do you want to sleep?
Hayden looked at her and shook his head.
“How do you feel right now?” Lily kept her eyes intently on him
There were not many opportunities to maintain eye contact with Hayden. Rowan said Hayden was recovering in stages. Step by step, Hayden was moving in a positive direction.
“Are you okay?” Hayden’s lips moved, managing to say a few words.
Lily nodded and said, “I’m good. I’ve started working now.”
