Chapter 32
Brenda stormed into her apartment, her fists clenched in frustration.
How could Adam ignore her? Not a single call, not even a text since last night. She felt like an afterthought.
How dare he pay more attention to Sophie, especially after everything that had happened? The thought of it made her blood boil.
“That’s it,” she muttered to herself. “If he’s going to ignore me, I’ll make him regret it. I’ll make sure everyone knows what’s really going on.”
Just as she was about to pick up her phone and draft a text that would send shockwaves through Adam’s social circle, the screen flashed, and her phone buzzed.
She froze. It was Adam.
She hesitated for a moment, her heart pounding. Then, unable to hold back, she answered.
“Adam,” she said, her voice cold but laced with an undertone of curiosity. “What’s going on? Why haven’t you called me?”
His voice on the other end was low, strained, and laced with fatigue. “Brenda… I’m sick. I need you.”
Brenda’s anger melted away, replaced by concern—though she tried to hide it. “Sick? What happened? You never told me you were unwell.”
There was a long pause before he spoke again, his voice sounding even more defeated. “I’ve got a fever… and I was… punched last night.”
“Wait, what? Punched? What are you talking about?” Brenda’s heart skipped a beat.
“The guy who came with Sophie,” Adam explained, his voice low, almost embarrassed. “He… punched me.”
Brenda’s pulse quickened. A punch? What was he trying to tell her here? Her mind raced with thoughts of how this situation might turn out, but she kept her voice steady.
“Forget about Sophie,” she said quickly, her words like a sharp snap. “I’m coming over. Stay in bed. I’ll take care of you.”
She didn’t wait for a response before hanging up and rushing to his apartment.

When Brenda walked through the door, she found Adam lying in bed, his face pale and twisted in pain. His lips were bruised, and his eyes were bloodshot from the fever.
She knelt beside the bed, her gaze softening as she looked at him. “What happened to you?” she asked gently, trying to mask her anger.
Adam turned his head slowly, his gaze meeting hers with a mixture of weariness and regret. “That guy… the one Sophie was with… he came after me. I wasn’t expecting it. It all happened so fast.”
Brenda’s lips pressed together as she listened. “And Sophie didn’t stop him?”
